The Seward County Community College menís tennis team opened its spring season last weekend with a dual against University of Nebraska Kearney and against Concordia University, both four-year institutions. The Saints dropped their opening match 3-9 against UNK, and picked up a match victory, 10-0, against Concordia. All nine SCCC tennis players saw action, as Seward County went 10-6 in singles competition and 3-3 in doubles play. The Saints began the season ranked No. 8 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top 30 poll.

Sophomore No. 2 singles player Robert Gomez won his first match of the spring with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against Andres Espinosa. The Saints also received singles victories from Michael Pettus (6-2, 0-6, 7-6) and Shawn Hodge (6-3, 6-3).

Seward County was defeated in all three doubles matches against UNK, by a combined 8-24 mark.

The Saints played well in their final dual of the weekend defeating Concordia University. Sophomore No. 3 singles player Victor Mesquita recorded a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win against Kyle Winter. Saintsí newcomer Caio Rodrigues also posted a shutout, winning 6-0, 6-0 against Curtis Miller in No. 7 singles play.

The Saints three doubles pairs all tallied wins with a combined 24-6 game score.

Seward County will play its only home match of the spring season this Saturday, March 15, at 1 p.m. against No. 9 nationally-ranked Barton County Community College at the Saints Tennis Courts on the campus of Seward County Community College.
