Seward County won the Jayhawk West Conference with a 69-58 victory on the road against Colby Community College last Sunday on the final day of the regular season. It is the fifth conference championship in 39 seasons of menís basketball at SCCC, and the first conference title under a first-year head coach. Bryan Zollinger leads the Saints into the Region VI Tournament where they have received the No. 1 seed from the Western Division. Seward County finished the regular season winning 12 of its last 13 games overall, and with four players all averaging at least 12 points per game. The last five seasons, Seward County has not advanced past the quarterfinals with a combined 3-4 record in four trips to the Region VI Tournament.

Seward Countyís last match-up with Labette came in a victory last season at the Jayhawk Shootout (73-61) on a neutral court in Coffeyville. The Cardinals last made the trip to Liberal in the non-conference portion of the 2005-2006 season, when the Saints dismantled Labette, 110-61, in both teamís second regular season game of the season. Since 1993, Seward County is 7-1 at the Green House in Region VI First-Round Playoff games. The Saints only loss came in 2000 against Jayhawk East No. 7 seed Highland C.C. (80-83).

Labette has lost 17 straight games entering the post-season. The Cardinals last victory came on Jan. 5, in their Jayhawk East Conference opener at home against Highland (83-80). Labetteís victory over Highland has been its only win against a non four-year junior varsity program this season. It is no secret who the main weapon is for Labette, as sophomore Mekaile Reed has scored 29 percent of the teamís points this season. Reed is currently averaging 21.7 points per game, which led the Region VI, and he is also the top rebounder for LCC averaging 7.1 boards per game. Labette also relies on 6-foot-8 post Andrija Tintor (13.9 ppg., 6.3 rpg.).
