The Seward County Community College women’s basketball team finished its conference season with a 63-55 victory over Colby Community College on Sunday afternoon at the Colby Community Building. Seward County secured a second-place finish in the Jayhawk West Conference and a No. 2 Western Division seeding for the upcoming NJCAA Region VI Tournament while winning 10 of its last 11 games overall. SCCC finishes the Jayhawk West Conference schedule with a 22-8 overall mark and 13-3 conference record. Colby also advances into the post-season after finishing in fifth-place in the Jayhawk West with an 11-19 overall record and 6-10 conference mark. The Lady Saints will open play in the Region VI Tournament playing a First-Round Playoff game on Wednesday, March 5, hosting Jayhawk East No. 7 seed Allen County Community College (12-18, 5-13) for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at the Green House in Liberal.

Seward County sophomore All-American Tegan Cunningham led all players with her 14th 20-plus scoring game of the season with 24 points on 10-of-21 shooting from the field. Lady Saints’ sophomore guard Audra Binford scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half connecting on four 3-pointers.

Cunningham scored eight points to lead the Lady Saints to an early 15-7 lead, forcing Colby to call a timeout at the 12:02 mark. Colby responded after the timeout going on a 10-2 run to tie the score, 17-17, with 7:32 remaining until halftime.

Binford knocked down three treys in Seward County’s 16-3 run going into halftime. Binford (12 points) and Cunningham scored in double figures during the first half, with Cunningham leading all players with 13 points and five rebounds with Seward County leading Colby, 33-20. SCCC limited Colby to 1-of-11 from long range while each team recorded 11 turnovers in the opening period.

After Seward County freshman LaNell Taylor made the first bucket of the second half, Colby went on a 16-6 run to cut the Lady Saints’ lead to five points (39-34) with 12:29 left to play.

Seward County pushed its lead to as many as 20 points (62-42) in the second half, going on an 18-4 run during a seven-minute stretch. The Lady Saints removed all of their starters at the 2:11 mark, before Colby finished the game on a 13-1 run.

SCCC freshman point guard Stephani Rhoten led all players shooting 8-of-9 from the free throw line while finishing with 12 points, four assists and a game-high five steals.

The Lady Saints recorded a season-high 17 steals, despite being out-rebounded for the ninth consecutive game (32-29). In addition, sophomore Jennifer Noel added nine points and eight rebounds for the Lady Saints.

Colby received scoring from 10 different players, with Whitney Archer leading the way with nine points on 3-of-15 shooting from the field.

The Lady Trojans will open Region VI Tournament action on the road against Jayhawk East No. 4 seed Labette Community College (24-6, 14-4) on Wednesday evening.
