The Seward County Community College softball team has received a second-place ranking in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Jayhawk West Pre-Season Coaches’ Poll that was released today. The pre-season poll was voted on by Jayhawk West head coaches. The Lady Saints are coming off a school-record 49 victories last season (49-13 overall) where they played in their third consecutive NJCAA D-I Region VI Tournament championship game. Seward County has won more games than any other Jayhawk West program the past three seasons (132).

Seward County is guided by sixth-year head coach Andrea Gustafson, who is just 12 wins shy of reaching 200 career victories (188-110 overall record). Gustafson has also led the Lady Saints’ program to three straight seasons finishing in either first or second place in the Jayhawk West Conference. Her career conference record stands at 55-27 entering the 2008 conference schedule.

The Lady Saints return three All-Conference selections from a year ago, including NJCAA Pre-Season Third Team All-American Jennifer Collins (.419, 15 2B, 7 HR, 48 RBI). Seward County also returns starting infielder Rachel Balencia (.413, 7 3B, 43 RBI) and starting catcher Melissa St. Clair (.349, 16 2B, 37 RBI).

Seward County is scheduled to open its season at home on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. against Lamar C.C. at Lady Saints Softball Field in Liberal.
