Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference officials announced the 2008 Jayhawk West Conference pre-season baseball coaches’ poll on Tuesday afternoon. The No. 25 nationally-ranked Seward County Community College baseball team has been predicted to finish in second-place among the nine-team Jayhawk West. The Saints are coming off a 36-22 overall record in 2007, where they were co-conference champions with Butler C.C. The Saints have claimed the Jayhawk West Conference championship in 10 of the last 15 seasons.

Seward County head baseball coach Galen McSpadden enters his 27th season as head coach at Seward County with an overall record of 874-475, and a Jayhawk West Conference record of 397-195. McSpadden, who recently was a NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame selection, is currently second all-time in Region VI history for career victories (874).

The Saints return their top three pitchers from a year ago, which includes NJCAA Pre-Season All-American Christian Kowalchuk. The 6-foot-1 left-handed pitcher tallied an 8-2 record as a freshman with a team-high 71 strikeouts in 77.1 innings pitched.

Seward County also returns four position players who all saw starting time during their freshman seasons including shortstop Austin Roff, catcher Brock Gifford, outfielder Luke Hardcastle and infielder Erik Hansen.

The Saints are scheduled to open their season on Saturday, Feb. 16, hosting Northeastern Colorado Junior College for a four-game home series at Brent Gould Field in Liberal.
