Seward County Community College sophomore baseball player Christian Kowalchuk has been named a Pre-Season NJCAA All-American. The NJCAA announced its Pre-Season All-Americans on Tuesday and Kowalchuk was one of 22 pitchers named to the prestigious list. Kowalchuk led the Saints during his freshman season in 2007, and was honored by being named the Jayhawk West Conference Freshman of the Year. Seward Countyís program has produced nine Jayhawk West Freshmen of the Year, with Kowalchuk being the first pitcher selected since Danny Vais (2003). Kowalchuk and the Saints are scheduled to open their season this Saturday, Feb. 16, hosting Northeastern Colorado J.C. for a four-game non-conference series at Brent Gould Field in Liberal, Kan.

Kowalchuk went 8-2 with two saves during his freshman season while collecting team-highs in strikeouts (71), complete games (6), shutouts (2) and innings pitched (77.1). The 6-foot-1 Saskatoon, Canada native was a perfect 6-0 in Jayhawk West Conference competition. Kowalchuk was also named First Team All-Conference and was awarded the Region VI Gold Glove award by being the Region VIís top defensive pitcher.

Last summer Kowalchuk was also named as a pitcher to the first-ever NJCAA Freshman Baseball All-Star Series in Millington, Tenn., at USA Baseball Stadium. Kowalchuk helped lead the West Team, where he was coached by current SCCC head coach Galen McSpadden, to a 2-0-1 overall record in the three-game All-Star series.

Kowalchuk joined three other Region VI players named to the NJCAA Pre-Season All-American list as Butlerís Bryant Cotton (Pitcher) and Dylan Petrich (Outfield), and Fort Scottís Jeff Rydman (Pitcher) were also honored.
