Seward County won its sixth straight game on Saturday evening, matching the program’s longest conference winning streak since 2001-2002. The 01-02 season was the Saints last conference championship season. The Saints enter Wednesday night in a tie for second-place in the Jayhawk West. The Saints started the second-half of conference play last Saturday night with a 75-61 victory on the road at Dodge City Community College. It was Seward’s fourth straight conference win on the road. The last loss for the Saints away from the Green House was against Hutchinson, 80-76, on Jan. 5, at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Seward County first-year head coach Bryan Zollinger has led the Saints to a Jayhawk West leading 19 victories.

Since 2000-2001, the Saints and Blue Dragons are tied, 8-8, in the overall series. The Saints lead 5-2 at the Green House, Hutchinson owns a 6-2 lead at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, and Seward County won the only match-up in Region VI Tournament play. The Blue Dragons have won four of the last five meetings, and seven of the last 10 overall.

Hutchinson’s pursuit of a perfect Jayhawk West season ended last Wednesday, as the Blue Dragons were defeated, 73-62, on the road at Cloud County C.C. HCC put together a 12-game winning streak that dated back to Nov. 27, when they notched a home victory against defending Region VI champion Coffeyville C.C. Leading the way for Hutchinson is 6-foot-3 point guard Bobby Maze, who leads the team in scoring (20.6 ppg.) and is among NJCAA leaders averaging 7.5 assists per game. Maze, a transfer from the University of Oklahoma, had a standout performance in the first meeting against the Saints posting a near triple-double with 21 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. In addition, Hutchinson second-year head coach Ryan Swanson is trying to win his second conference championship, after leading Garden City Community College’s to its first-ever conference crown in 2004-2005.
