The Seward County Community College volleyball team defeated Cloud County Community College 30-26, 30-24, 30-16 on Tuesday night in the NJCAA D-I Region VI Play-In-Match at the Green House in Liberal. The Lady Saints, seeded No. 3 in the Region VI bracket, won their 18th consecutive match against the No. 6 seeded Lady T-Birds dating back to 1999. Seward County advances to this weekend’s Region VI Tournament to face No. 2 seed Hutchinson Community College at 3 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The Lady Saints improve to 29-13 overall this season and Cloud County finishes their 2007 season with a 10-23 overall mark.

Cloud County traveled to the Green House and gave SCCC all they wanted in the three-game match. Seward began to pull away in the first game with two kills from Jelena Simic, a kill from Mallori Proffitt, a service ace from Ami Wang and a team block to grab a 10-5 lead. Simic continued to lead the offense with two straight kills giving the Lady Saints a 20-11 lead.

Cloud County later took advantage of eight SCCC miscues to get within one point (25-24) late in the first game. Seward County finished the first game behind a kill and ace from Simic, a kill from Alex Droogsma and a kill on game-point from Dan Yang.

Game-two featured a back-and-forth battle as the two teams stayed knotted at seven. Simic recorded three straight kills to give the Lady Saints a 10-7 advantage, before Cloud County got back into the game tying the score at 11. Proffitt collected three kills during a four-point stretch to give the Lady Saints the lead for good in the second game. Proffitt tallied five kills in game-two and she tied a career-high with 14 kills during the match. Her .600 hitting percentage (14 kills, 2 errors, 20 attempts) led all players Tuesday night.

In game-three, the Lady T-Birds trailed 12-9 when the Lady Saints took control and went on an 18-7 run to finish the game. Yang sparked the rally with three straight service aces and Simic also added offense as Seward County closed out the match. Yang posted 15 kills with four aces, four blocks and three digs. Simic recorded a match-high 22 kills and she collected her 22nd double/double with 14 digs.

In the other Region VI Play-In-Match, No. 4 seed Garden City C.C. hosted Colby C.C. at 7:30 p.m. at the Perryman Center Tuesday night. The winner of Garden City/Colby will advance to play No. 1 seed Barton County C.C. at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The winner of Seward County/Hutchinson will play the winner of Barton County/Garden City or Colby at 7 p.m. in the winner’s bracket on Sunday. The loser of Hutchinson/Seward will face the loser of Barton County/Garden City or Colby at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
