The Seward County Community College volleyball team struggled during the opening day of the SCCC Invitational with two straight losses against No. 17 Northeastern Colorado Junior College (29-31, 28-30) and Arizona Western College (17-30, 25-30). The No. 15 nationally-ranked Lady Saints played a competitive match against the Plainswomen from NJC, but were not able to take either game in their opening match on Friday. Arizona Western collected their second win of the Invitational in the late match Friday night, with a convincing victory over the Lady Saints at the Green House in Liberal. Seward County has lost four of their last five matches, with three against nationally-ranked opponents.

Northeastern Colorado had revenge on their mind, after last month, it was SCCC who traveled to the N.E. Colorado Tournament where they pulled off an upset over the then-No. 10 ranked Plainswomen in Sterling, Colo. Northeastern Colorado improved their overall season record to 32-9 with the two game sweep over SCCC.

In the final match on Friday, Seward County battled against Arizona Western and held their final lead in the first game with a 14-13 edge. That is when AWC went on a 13-2 run, which included eight kills and three blocks. The Lady Matadors controlled the net with five team blocks during the first game.

Seward County was kept in the first game by standout freshman Dan Yang who posted six kills in the opening frame. Yang provided crucial offense for Seward County with her first four kills giving Seward County either the lead or tying the score.

The second game stayed close early, with neither team gaining more than a two point lead. Seward County recorded an 11-10 lead before the Lady Matadors added 10 kills and three blocks to cruise to a five point victory.

Arizona Western posted two wins on Friday also defeating Midland College 30-20, 19-30, 15-13 on Friday morning. Arizona Western improved their overall record to 19-5, while Seward County drops to 25-9 overall this season.
