The No. 12 Seward County Community College volleyball team lost its first conference match of the season on the road at No. 16 Hutchinson Community College 27-30, 21-30, 16-30, in front of a Hutchinson C.C. school-record crowd of 1,350 fans. The Lady Blue Dragons extended their Jayhawk West Conference winning streak to 29 straight matches, and have not been defeated in conference play since 2003. Seward County committed 40 errors and posted a .184 hitting percentage while falling to 24-6 overall, 5-1 in the Jayhawk West Conference and to 3-1 in NJCAA D-I Region VI competition.

The first game went back and forth with six ties and two lead changes. Freshmen Dan Yang recorded seven kills and Jelena Simic tallied five kills in the opening game. The Lady Blue Dragons started to pull away with a 6-0 run, giving Hutch a 24-18 lead. The Lady Saints didnít fold as they narrowed the lead to 29-27, but HCC sophomore Sarah Unruh added a kill that gave Hutchinson the first game 30-27.

Seward County jumped out to 8-2 lead in the second game behind three early kills from Yang. Hutchinson then focused on Yang, holding the powerful outside hitter to just three kills the remainder of the game. Hutchinson tied the match at 14 all, and held Seward to a .079 hitting percentage in game two. Hutchinson outscored SCCC 28-13 following the Lady Saints early lead.

In game-three, Seward County grabbed a lead with the score 10-9, but the Lady Blue Dragons finished the match on a 21-6 run to finish the match in three games.

Yang led all players with 19 kills and chipped in a .341 hitting percentage (19 kills, 5 errors, 41 attempts), two aces and two digs. Sophomore Alex Droogsma collected 18 assists and seven digs, and Katy Troutman led the Lady Saints with 13 digs.

Seward County will continue play against nationally-ranked opponents traveling to No. 7 Frank Phillips College on Friday, Oct. 5 for a 6 p.m. scheduled first serve. Earlier this season Frank Phillips defeated Seward County 14-30, 29-31, 31-33 in the SCCC Kick-Off Classic.
