This past weekend the Seward County Community College tennis team competed at the International Tennis Association Regional Tournament where the champions advance to the ITA National Tournament later this fall. The Saints didnít have any players qualify for nationals, but several players collected victories at the tournament in Overland Park, Kan. In singles play, sophomores Roberto Gomez, Victor Mesquita and Rogerio Yamamoto paced SCCC with two wins each. The Saints are now 49-42 overall this fall in singles and doubles match competition.

The competition was filled with national contenders with Cowley College, Johnson County C.C. and the University of Arkansas-Forth Smith all making national tournament appearances last year.

Gomez was defeated in his opening round match, but tallied back-to-back victories against two players from Arkansas-Fort Smith before being eliminated by Cowley College.

Mesquita, who played No. 3 singles for the Saints a year ago, lost in his first round match against Barton County, and finished with two consecutive 8-6 victories over Cowley College opponents.

Yamamoto made his first appearance at a regional tournament since winning the No. 5 singles regional last spring. He dropped his first match in straight sets to Barton County, and then countered with victories against Cowley College (8-0) and Arkansas-Fort Smith (8-2) before being eliminated by another Cowley College player.

Yamamoto and Cabizuca provided Seward County with their only doubles victory over Johnson County 7-5, 6-2.

This weekend the Saints will travel to Great Bend, Kan., to compete in the Barton County C.C. Dual on Friday and Saturday.
