The Seward County Community College volleyball team opened their 2007 season with two straight victories on Friday at the SCCC Kick-Off Classic, sponsored by Jolies Images. Behind a standout debut from freshman Dan Yang, the Lady Saints knocked off Cisco Junior College (30-23, 30-18 and 30-15) and New Mexico Military Institute (30-14, 30-18, 18-30 and 30-22) on their home court at the Green House. Yang, a 6-foot-2-inch outside hitter from Beijing, China, tied a SCCC all-time record for aces in a match with 10, and collected a total of 35 kills (.458 %) and 15 service aces in her Lady Saints’ debut on Friday.

Seward County started off hot defeating Cisco J.C. in dominating fashion. SCCC hit .420 as a team (43 kills, 9 errors and 81 attempts) with Yang (14 kills) and freshman outside hitter Jelena Simic (13 kills) leading the way.

Yang put SCCC on her back and carried them to a game-two victory over Cisco. With the Lady Saints trailing 14-16, Yang stepped behind the service line for the start of an incredible run for the Lady Saints’ newcomer. Yang led Seward County to 15 straight points during her serving onslaught with eight service aces. Yang is now tied at the top of the SCCC record books for aces in a single-match with Janete Ferreira, who also recorded 10 aces in a three-game match victory against Pratt Community College in 2005.

Seward County was also led by freshman Chelsea Myers (20 assists, nine digs and five kills) and sophomores Alex Droogsma (19 assists, four kills and three digs) and Katy Troutman (team-high 10 digs).

Following a dominating match against Cisco, Seward County kept their momentum rolling with a four-game victory against NMMI. Seward cruised during the first two games hitting .609 (16 kills, 2 errors and 23 attempts) in game-one and .577 (16 kills, 1 error and 26 attempts) in game-two as a team. The Lady Broncos won game-three 30-18, but SCCC wouldn’t back down ending the match in game-four, 30-22.

Yang once again led the Lady Saints with 21 kills (.359 %), nine digs, five aces and two blocks. Simic collected her second straight double-figure match in kills with 15, while leading the team with a .462 hitting percentage. Freshman Mallori Proffitt posted six kills and three blocks and freshman middle hitter Jenna Ginest posted a team-high four blocks and three kills. In addition, Troutman led the team with 12 digs against NMMI.

The SCCC 6-2 offense is paying off with both Droogsma and Myers contributing as hitters and also as setters. Both players tallied a team-high 23 assists, and Myers also recorded six kills and six digs.

Droogsma’s 42 assists on Friday moves her past April Fries (2000-2001) into third-place all-time for SCCC career assists (1,793).

The Lady Saints will finish their SCCC Kick-Off Classic competition on Saturday hosting Frank Phillips College at 11 a.m. and Garden City Community College at 5 p.m.

The only two unbeaten teams after the first day of competition are the two programs that last won the Kick-Off Classic, Seward County and Frank Phillips College. The Lady Plainsmen defeated Garden City (3-0) and Cisco (3-0) on Friday. Last year, Frank Phillips won the Kick-Off Classic with a 4-0 record and didn’t lose a game during all four matches. Seward County was the champion the previous year going 4-0 on their home court. Garden City picked up a victory against New Mexico Military (3-1), but lost their opening match in three straight games to Frank Phillips. Cisco was defeated in three straight games by both Seward County and Frank Phillips, and New Mexico Military also went winless on Friday (lost to both SCCC and GCCC.).
