The National Junior College Athletic Association has announced the rosters for the first-ever NJCAA Baseball Freshman All-Star Series that will be held June 14-17 at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn. Seward County Community College left-handed pitcher Christian Kowalchuk has been named to the West Roster as a left handed pitcher. Kowalchuk, who finished his freshman season at SCCC this past season was named the Jayhawk West Conference Freshman of the Year, while recording an 8-2 record with a 4.41 earned run average. Kowalchuk is one of nine pitchers on the West roster and will be coached by his head coach during the school year, Galen McSpadden, who will be an assistant coach for the West team.

The NJCAA Freshman All-Star Series will showcase the top freshmen from this past season beginning on Thursday, June 14 with a ‘Scout Night’ practice, and will continue with one-game on Friday, June 15 and the two remaining games on Saturday, June 16.

Kowalchuk was a perfect 6-0 with a 2.60 ERA in seven conference starts last season. He led the Saints with 65 strikeouts, 72 innings pitched, six complete games and two shutouts. He was also named First Team All-Conference, NJCAA Pitcher of the Week and he was awarded the NJCAA Region 6 Gold Glove Award (pitcher).

McSpadden will be the pitching coach for the West team and will work with New Mexico Junior College head coach Ray Birmingham (head coach) and also with Tony Cirelli (assistant coach) of Mesa Community College. The East team coaching staff consists of head coach Tom Arrington (San Jacinto College), and assistant coaches Rick Hitt (South Florida C.C.) and Jeff Willis (Louisiana State University-Eunice).

The Freshman All-Star series will provide exposure to players who have just completed their freshman year at NJCAA schools to four-year coaches and professional scouts. Players named to the East and West All-Star teams were nominated by their head coaches and were selected by each teams head coaches. The “West” team consists of players from NJCAA member schools in Regions 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 13, 16, 18 and 24. The “East” team was selected with players from Regions 3, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23.

Four players named to the East and West team rosters were named NJCAA All-Americans this past season including Doug Kroll (Iowa Western C.C.), the NJCAA Most Valuable Player, who will be playing for the West team.
