The Seward County Community College freshmen pitching duo of Christian Kowalchuk and Tomas Cruz led the Saints to a Jayhawk West Conference baseball doubleheader sweep on the road over Colby Community College, 7-0 and 4-1 on Sunday afternoon in Colby. Kowalchuk threw a seven-inning complete game in the Saints 7-0 shutout in game-one, while Cruz also pitched a seven-inning complete game in the nightcap to help pace the Saints in their first road sweep of the season. Third-place Seward County improves to 25-17 overall and to 12-6 in the Jayhawk West/Region VI standings. Fourth-place Colby falls to 23-16 overall and to 10-8 in the Jayhawk West/Region VI standings.

Kowalchuk improved his season record to 6-1 after dominating the Trojan batters in his complete game performance. The 6-foot-1-inch left-handed pitcher went the distance and collected seven strikeouts and allowed only two base-on-balls. The Saints were lifted offensively by Kai Kirby (3-for-3) and several players who collected at least one base hit.

Seward County received production up-and-down the line-up with three players recording RBI, and additional players who scored runs. Sophomore first baseman Tanner Rindels had a two-run double that scored two runs and left fielder Stu Schlemeyer went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Saints sophomore right fielder Erik Hegstad recorded a RBI and freshman third baseman Erik Hansen didnít reach base on a base hit, but did score two runs.

In game-two, Cruz kept Colby off balance and the Saints posted two runs in the first and fifth innings each. Seward County started the scoring with Toby Davis driving home Luke Hardcastle with a RBI single to left field in the top of the first inning. Brock Gifford plated another run for Seward in the first with a hard groundball up the middle that deflected off the pitcherís foot, allowing Hegstad to score.

Colby tallied a run in the second inning to cut the score to 2-1. Neither team scored runs in the third or fourth inning before Seward scored two runs in the fifth frame. Hansen led off the fifth with a walk and then scored on an error by Kris Jiggitts, the Trojan starting pitcher, who fielded a bunt by Schlemeyer and overthrew the first baseman to bring Hansen in to score from first base. Schlemeyer followed with a run scored on a single to right field by Hardcastle, giving the Saints a 4-1 lead.

Cruz improves to 4-1 on the season, after throwing seven innings, allowing only one walk and striking out five batters.
