The Seward County Community College baseball team split a Jayhawk West Conference doubleheader with Hutchinson Community College on Saturday afternoon at Hobart-Deter Field in Hutchinson. The Saints defeated the Dragons 7-1 in game-one and Hutchinson came back with a 6-5 victory in the nightcap. Seward County is now 22-16 overall and 9-5 in the Jayhawk West Conference. Hutchinson is now 20-15 overall and 9-9 in Jayhawk West competition.

The Saints were guided by Christian Kowalchuk’s complete-game effort in the opening game. Kowalchuk tossed a seven inning game, allowing four hits, one run and four walks with six strikeouts. Kai Kirby (2-for-4, two doubles and two RBI), Luke Hardcastle (2-for-4) and Tanner Rindles (1-for-3, home run) led the Saints at the plate in the opening game.

Seward County trailed 5-0 entering the top of the seventh inning in game-two, before plating five runs to tie the score. Freshman Michael Drzazga collected a two-run double, Kirby hit a sacrifice fly, Schlemeyer posted a RBI single and Erik Hegstad scored Schlemeyer with a RBI in the Saints seventh inning comeback. The Saints evened the score with five runs and two hits in the inning.

Saints relief pitcher Karl Whitley recorded one out in the bottom of the seventh inning before Derek Dibbens hit his first home run of the season to give the Blue Dragons the 6-5 victory. The Saint used a total of four pitchers in the game with freshman Tomas Cruz starting the game, and sophomore Eric Everson, and freshmen Tyler Binkley and Whitley all pitching for SCCC.

Seward County will be back in action on Wednesday, April 11 at 3 p.m. hosting Dodge City Community College for a 3 p.m. first-pitch at Brent Gould Field.
