The Seward County Community College softball team has moved up to No. 17 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association Top 20 softball poll. This past week Seward County went 4-0 with two doubleheader sweeps over Clarendon College and Neosho County C.C. The Lady Saints spent two weeks at No. 20 in the NJCAA poll before receiving their third straight ranking on Wednesday. Seward County joins Butler Community College (No. 19) as the only softball programs in the Division I poll from within the Region VI. The Lady Saints are currently 35-5 after picking up a doubleheader sweep over Garden City C.C. Tuesday in Garden City.

Seward County has relied on a line-up full of .300 hitters and a pitching staff that has been solid all season with just two pitchers. The Lady Saints are currently 13th in the nation in team batting average hitting .377 as a team and seventh in the nation in team base hits. Seward County also ranks fourth in the nation for team winning percentage (.875).

The Seward County batting line-up is loaded top-to-bottom with solid hitters including freshmen Jena Rue (.480, 17 doubles, five home runs and 42 RBI), Jennifer Collins (.459, 12 doubles, six home runs and 40 RBI), Rachel Balencia (.385, six doubles and 16 RBI) and sophomores Lili Franco (.434, nine home runs and 23 RBI), Meisha Patterson (.380, 10 home runs, 43 RBI and 20 stolen bases) and Sarah Venegas (.375, seven home runs and 52 RBI).

Venegas currently ranks 10th in the nation in RBI, Patterson is 12th in the nation in home runs and Franco is currently 18th in the country in home runs.

The Lady Saints pitching staff has been anchored by sophomore Stephanie McCarthy and Dana McLaren who both rank nationally in several statistical categories. McCarthy is currently 18th in the nation in wins (18) and McLaren ranks 25th (16). McCarthy ranks in the Top 20 in earned run average for pitchers who have thrown at least 110 innings this season, with McCarthy posting a 1.95 ERA. McCarthy and McLaren have combined for nine shutouts and 33 complete games this season.
