Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference officials announced the 2007 Jayhawk East and West Conference pre-season coaches’ poll on Tuesday afternoon. The Seward County Community College baseball team received a second-place voting by conference coaches in the Jayhawk West pre-season poll. The Saints are coming off a 33-27 overall record in 2006, where they tied for fifth place with Colby Community College. Seward County has claimed the Jayhawk West Conference title in nine of the past 14 seasons.

SCCC head baseball coach Galen McSpadden enters his 26th season as head coach at Seward County with an overall record of 838-453, and a Jayhawk West Conference record of 374-186. McSpadden’s 838 career victories rank him second all-time among Region VI coaches and 13th in the nation among active coaches.

Seward County completed their 2006 season in the Region VI Tournament Final Four. The Saints are the only baseball program in the Region VI to place in the Top 4 at the Region VI Tournament in each of the past three seasons.

The Saints return four starters from last season and a total of nine sophomores from 2006. The Saints coaching staff welcomes in 19 freshmen to join their program this season.

Returning for the Saints are two Jayhawk West All-Conference performers including First Team All-Conference third baseman, Toby Davis (.311 batting average, nine home runs, five triples and 43 RBI) and Honorable Mention All-Conference right fielder, Erik Hegstad (.366 batting average, 75 hits, 23 doubles, five home runs and 49 RBI).

Seward County is scheduled to open their season this Saturday, Feb. 17, at home against Clarendon College for a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Brent Gould Field in Liberal.
