Seward County Community College sophomore guard Michael Tyree tied a career-high scoring 28 points in the Saints 89-70 loss against Hutchinson Community College, on Wednesday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The Saints were out-rebounded 46-34, and Hutchinson shot 64 percent (18-of-28) in the second-half as the Blue Dragons snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory. The Saints were without Darko Cohadarevic (10.9 ppg. and 5.9 rpg.) and Ervin Williams (7.6 ppg. and 5.1 rpg.) Wednesday night, as the Saints looked to a depleted bench that combined scored only one point. Seward County drops their second consecutive conference game and falls to 13-10 overall and 4-6 in the Jayhawk West Conference. Hutchinson improves to 17-6 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

Cohadarevic has missed the past four games due to an injury and Williams missed Wednesday night while sitting out his one-game suspension for being ejected in the Saints previous game at home against Dodge City. Depth was a serious issue for the Saints as Hutchinson’s bench outscored the Saints 29-1.

Tyree was the Saints biggest offensive weapon against Hutchinson, hitting 10-of-23 shots from the field and 5-of-15 from three-point range for a game-high 28 points. It was the eighth game this season that Tyree has made at least five three-point buckets. Tyree matched his career-high that he posted in a non-conference game earlier this season on the road at Newman University J.V.

The Saints pulled ahead early with a 12-7 lead in the first-half before Hutchinson gained the lead 13-12, and would never trail again. The Blue Dragons led at halftime 42-30, after shooting 45 percent in the first-half. Seward County cut Hutchinson’s lead to six points twice in the second period, but saw the Blue Dragons expand their lead to as many as 21 points with less than a minute remaining in the game.

Hutchinson was led by NJCAA pre-season All-American Nate Brumfield, who scored a team-high 21 points with seven rebounds. Brumfield tallied his 10th game this season with over 20 points by shooting 8-for-8 from the floor.

Seward County also received a strong performance from sophomore forward Theron Wilson, who tallied his sixth straight double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Wilson has now recorded 18 career double-doubles and 43 games he has scored in double-figures.

The Blue Dragons were sparked by reserve guard Nolan Richardson IV, who scored 20 points and chipped in five assists coming off the bench. Hutchinson forward Bobby Davis led all players with 13 rebounds, and also scored in double-figures with 14 points.

Seward County will have this weekend off and will return to action next Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the Green House against Barton County Community College for a Jayhawk West Conference tip-off at 8 p.m.
