The No. 3 nationally-ranked Seward County Community College women’s basketball team improved their undefeated season on Saturday during SCCC Homecoming night with a 89-55 blowout over Dodge City Community College at the Green House in Liberal, Kan. The Lady Saints scored 54 second-half points and had five players score in double-figures as they notched their Jayhawk Conference leading 23rd victory of the season. Seward County has now defeated Dodge City seven straight times at the Green House by an average of 25.3 points per game. It was the Lady Saints largest victory over Dodge City since 2001, when SCCC defeated the Lady Conqs 98-41 in Liberal. First place Seward County improves their unbeaten record to 23-0 overall and 9-0 in the Jayhawk West Conference. Sixth place Dodge City falls to 8-15 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
Each team had leads in the first-half, but Seward County grabbed a 7-6 lead with 14:58 remaining in the half and never trailed after that point. The Lady Saints increased their lead to 35-26 at halftime. The difference in the first half was the 14 turnovers that Dodge City committed, verses Seward County’s five turnovers. Seward County’s Taushelle Rushing posted eight points and four steals at halftime, while freshman Tegan Cunningham scored 12 first-half points.
Seward County took over the game in the second-half keeping their lead in double-figures from the 16:15 mark, all the way until the final buzzer. The Lady Saints shot 56 percent (19-for-34) in the second period, including 7-of-13 (54 percent) from three-point range.
Cunningham connected on 9-of-14 shots from the field and recorded her 10th double-double of the season, and her 22nd game scoring in double-figures with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman guard Audra Binford tallied five 3-pointers for the fourth time of the season. Binford, who averages 10.9 points per game coming off the bench, is now leading the team with 46 three-point field goals this season.
Freshman guard Chontaye Walter scored 18 points with five assists and three steals. Walter currently leads the Region VI in assist/turnover ratio (4.38), and is tied for 11th in the nation in assists (114). Rushing finished with 16 points and seven steals, which is the 12th game this season where she has recorded at least six steals in a single-game. Rushing is now tied for third-place all-time in SCCC single-season steals with Candi White (1999-2000) who also recorded 121 steals her sophomore season.
Dodge City was led by Patrice McKenzie (17 points), Keri Rausch (14 points) and Sharece Taft (11 points and nine rebounds).
Seward County will travel to Hutchinson Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 3, for a 6 p.m. Jayhawk West Conference tip-off at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson, Kan.
