It could have been considered turn-back-the-clock-night at the Green House on Wednesday night as Dale Reed and Randy Smithson had one last battle in a Jayhawk West Conference game. The Seward County Community College men’s basketball team knocked off the Butler Grizzlies 68-56, in a match-up of two coaches who spent most of the 1980’s and 1990’s fighting for Jayhawk West supremacy. The Saints picked up the conference victory behind a 55 percent shooting effort in the second-half, and receiving scoring from every Saints player who entered the game.

Dale Reed, who coached the Saints from 1983-1996 before retiring from coaching, has been back on the sidelines for the Saints as Interim Coach, during head coach Dave Brown’s four-game suspension. Wednesday night was the final game for Reed to coach the Saints this season, after he guided them to a 2-2 record during the opening four games of conference play.

Reed won two NJCAA Region VI championships at Seward County (1985 & 1995), while competing against Randy Smithson’s Butler program, who won four Region VI titles during Smithson’s first tenure (1985-1996) as head coach of the Grizzlies.

The night belonged to the Saints as they trailed only four times during the game, all within the opening six minutes. In the first-half, the Saints went on a 10-0 run taking a 22-12 lead with 10:03 remaining in the half. Seward shot well in the opening period (48 percent), while Butler struggled making just 9-of-28 (32 percent) shots from the field.

Butler burst through the gates to open the second period, scoring on three consecutive possessions to cut the Saints lead to 29-28. The Saints then grabbed control of the game going on a 19-3 run over a seven minute period sparked by sophomore shooting guard Michael Tyree’s 11 points. Tyree recorded two three-point buckets, one of which went for a four-point play after being fouled and making the free-throw.

Seward County would lead by as many as 19 points during the second-half, as the Saints shot 51 percent from the field during the game and out-rebounded Butler 37-31.

Tyree led the Saints with 14 points (3-for-6 from three-point range) and Darko Cohadarevic chipped in 11 points with four rebounds and three assists. Theron Wilson, the leading scorer (22.8 ppg.) and rebounder (11.2 rpg.) in the Region VI, was held to nine points and seven rebounds. It was the first game this season that Wilson didn’t record double-figures in scoring. Seward County also had productivity from Bryson Hampton (eight points and three rebounds), Ervin Williams (eight points and five rebounds) and Nick Burns (six points and six assists).

Seward County will host Cloud County C.C. (13-3, 2-1) for a Jayhawk West Conference game on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 8 p.m. at the Green House.
