The National Junior College Athletic Association announced on Wednesday that Seward County Community College freshman Tegan Cunningham was named a Co-NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 3-9. Cunningham has now received national player of the week honors twice this season, making her the first athlete ever from SCCC in any sport to be named national player of the week twice during a season. Cunningham helped lead the No. 7 Seward County Lady Saints to a perfect 3-0 record with wins over Fort Scott C.C. (97-65), Northeastern Colorado (74-51) and Hastings College J.V. (91-59).

Cunningham was named Co-Player of the Week along with Essence Chambers, a 5-foot-3-inch guard from Lenoir C.C. who scored 48 points in a single-game last week.

Cunningham, a 6-foot-1-inch guard/forward from Doncaster, Australia, scored 23 points with 10 rebounds in the final game of the Jayhawk Shootout in Coffeyville. Cunningham shot 11-of-12 from the field and also collected five steals and two blocks in only 22 minutes of action against the Lady Greyhounds. She posted 10 points with nine rebounds in a victory over Northeastern Colorado last Saturday night. In SCCC’s final game of the week, Cunningham scored 17 points and chipped in 11 rebounds and three assists in a win at home against Hastings College J.V. For the week, Cunningham averaged 16.7 points and 10 rebounds per game.

This season, Cunningham is leading the Lady Saints in scoring (16.0 ppg.) and rebounding (9.5 rpg.).

The Lady Saints (12-0) remained at No. 7 in the latest NJCAA Top 25 poll that was released on Wednesday. SCCC has been ranked in all four regular season polls this season. Seward County is among only five teams in the NJCAA D-I who remain undefeated this season.

Seward County will finish their non-conference schedule on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30 traveling to Palm Springs, California. The Lady Saints will play on Friday at San Bernardino College (2 p.m.) and on Saturday night at Imperial Valley College (6 p.m.).
