The Seward County Community College women's basketball team will be at the Green House this weekend hosting the Pizza Hut Classic, Dec. 8-9. The Lady Saints recently received a No. 7 NJCAA national ranking in the latest poll and they enter this weekend's classic with a 10-0 overall record. The Lady Saints picked up two victories last weekend at the Jayhawk Shootout defeating Highland C.C. (106-58) and Fort Scott C.C. (97-65). This weekend the Lady Saints will entertain Northeastern Colorado J.C. on Friday night and will take on Hastings College J.V. on Saturday night. SCCC will be in action both nights at 6 p.m. Free tickets to the Pizza Hut Classic will be available this week at the local Liberal Pizza Hut locations.

Seward County currently owns a 39 game non-conference winning streak that extends back to the 2003-2004 season. This season SCCC ranks in several national statistics categories including seventh in team offensive average (86.3 ppg.), tenth in field goal percentage (.471 %), 13th in free-throw shooting (.688 %), 16th in team defense average (53.1 ppg.) and 28th in three-point shooting (.347 %).

Team leaders for the Lady Saints this season have been Tegan Cunningham (16.5 ppg. and 9.4 rpg.), Chelsea Blackshear (11.0 ppg. and 4.6 apg.), Audra Binford (9.8 ppg. and 15 three-pointers), Ilda Chambe (12.6 ppg. and 10.8 rpg.), Chontaye Walter (9.7 ppg. and 4.7 apg.), Alyson Snell (7.6 ppg. and .909 FT %), Jennifer Noel (9.2 ppg. and .676 FG%) and Taushelle Rushing (15.0 ppg., 5.3 spg. and 2.9 rpg.).

Northeastern Colorado J.C. will have a chance for revenge against the Lady Saints on Friday night after suffering an 82-56, loss in Sterling, Colo., on Nov. 10. In their initial meeting this season, the Lady Plainswomen were held to 17 percent (5-for-29) shooting from the field in the first half. N.E. Colorado was led by Daria Basova (12 points and 10 rebounds) and Kristen Forbes (10 points) who were their leading scorers.

This season Northeastern Colorado has been led by Basova, who averages 17.9 points, 9.7 rebounds and is an 82 percent (55-for-67) free-throw shooter. The Plainswomen have also seen success this season from Roni Whitman (10.2 ppg. and 3.7 rpg.), Sarah Conner (10.4 ppg. and 6.1 rpg.) and Jackie Davis (9.7 ppg. and 5.0 rpg.).

The Hastings College varsity program has a remarkable reputation in the NAIA ranks with three National Championships over the last five seasons. Their junior varsity program will come to Liberal to compete in the Pizza Hut Classic with nine sophomores and three freshmen listed on their roster. But, out of the Lady Broncos 12 players who will be with them this weekend, six players have varsity playing experience this season accounting for 24 % (19.2 ppg.) of the varsity teams scoring this season.

Lady Broncos 5-foot-10-inch guard Rachel VanKirk has averaged 7.1 points per game (varsity competition), and 5-foot-5-inch guard Kim Faimon is averaging 5.1 points per game with the varsity this year. Hastings J.V. played well on the road earlier this season dropping their season opener at No. 1 ranked Cloud County C.C. 71-74, in Concordia, Kan.
