Seward County Community College sophomore women’s basketball player, Chelsea Blackshear, signed a National Collegiate Athletic Association letter of intent with West Texas A&M University on Wednesday afternoon. Blackshear and the Lady Saints Basketball program held a press conference on Wednesday in the SCCC All-American Room to announce where Blackshear would sign for the 2007-2008 basketball season. Blackshear is a starting guard for the Lady Saints this season and is averaging 11.3 points and leads the team with 4.3 assists per game.

In four games this season, Blackshear has averaged 28.5 minutes played, shot .531 from the floor (17-for-32), 8-of-28 from three-point range (.286) and is averaging 3.0 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game.

Blackshear will join the Lady Buffalos basketball program in 2007-2008, a program that is traditionally an NCAA Division II powerhouse. In 2005-2006, West Texas A&M completed their season with an overall record of 28-4, under legendary head coach, Bob Schneider. After last season, Schneider retired with 43 years of coaching at the high school and collegiate level with an overall coaching record of 1,045-293 (781). Schneider spent 25 years as head coach of the Lady Buffaloes.

This season, the Lady Buffs have hired first year head coach Krista Gerlich, a former assistant coach at Texas Tech University. West Texas A&M enters this season with high expectations with a No. 1 Pre-Season Lone Star Conference South Division ranking and a Pre-Season No. 5 ranking in NCAA Division II. After one weekend of competition, West Texas A&M is currently 2-1 overall this season.
