The Seward County Community College women’s basketball team defeated Northeastern Colorado Junior College 82-56, in the opening game of the Northeastern Colorado Classic, Friday night in Sterling Colo. The Lady Saints (3-0, 0-0) controlled the game by shooting 54 per cent from the floor and limiting Northeastern Colorado to 24 per cent from the field. Seward County used double-figure scoring from three players to win Friday night at the Bank of Colorado Event Center in Sterling.

Seward County’s defense was relentless limiting Northeastern Colorado to five field goals in the first-half (5-of-29). Seward County took a 38-20 lead going into half-time by shooting 48 per cent from the floor in the opening frame.

The Lady Saints out scored the Lady Plainsmen 44-36 in the second half behind a 16-for-27 shooting effort from the field and a 9-of-11 team performance from the free-throw line.

SCCC received strong performances from freshman, Tegan Cunningham (19 points and 14 rebounds), sophomore, Ilda Chambe (20 points and nine rebounds) and freshman, Chontaye Walter (11 points and six steals).

This season the Lady Saints have used a wide range of players while averaging 80.7 points per game. Seward County’s statistical leaders this season are Tegan Cunningham (16.7 ppg. and 11.7 rpg.), Chelsea Blackshear (5.0 apg.), Taushelle Rushing (5.0 spg.) and Chontaye Walter (5.0 spg.).

Seward County will take on Carson Air Force Base on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (MT) in their final game of the Northeastern Colorado Classic.
