After a 2-0 start to the season, the Seward County Community College women’s basketball team will travel to the Northeastern Colorado Classic this weekend in Sterling, Colo. The Lady Saints (2-0, 0-0) will play on Friday, Nov. 10 at 8:00 p.m. against the host team Northeastern Colorado J.C. (2-0). Saturday, the Lady Saints will take on Carson Air Force Base at 1:00 p.m. All games played this weekend at the N.E. Colorado Classic will be held at the Bank of Colorado Event Center in Sterling.

The Seward County women’s basketball team played two of the most impressive second half’s last weekend to defeat Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (80-46) on Friday night, and to come from behind defeating Frank Phillips College (90-70) in their final game in the Pepsi Classic on Saturday. Both games combined in the second-half, Seward County limited their opponents to 39 points, 14-of-63 (.182) shooting from the field and 5-for-19 (.263) shooting from three-point range.

Seward County has been led by a handful of returning players and also several newcomers. Sophomore guard Taushelle Rushing is averaging 20.5 points, 4.0 steals and 3.0 rebounds per game. Lady Saints shooting guard, Chelsea Blackshear, has also stepped into a starting role by averaging 15.5 points and 7.0 assists per game. Two Lady Saints freshmen who have entered their collegiate careers with success are Chontaye Walter (12.5 ppg., 3.0 apg. and 4.5 spg.) and Tegan Cunningham (15.5 ppg., 10.5 rpg. and 3.0 apg.).

Over the years, the Lady Saints and N.E. Colorado have had many battles in women’s basketball. Perhaps their most notable dual came in the opening round of the 2002 NJCAA National Tournament. The Lady Saints national title team was taken to overtime by the Lady Plainsmen before SCCC won the game 76-71 (O.T.) on their way to winning the national championship.

This season, Northeastern Colorado is currently 2-0, after defeating Doane J.V. (60-49) and Air Force Prep (83-36). The Lady Plainsmen have been led in scoring by freshman Sarah Conner (13 ppg.) and sophomore Daria Basova (13.5 ppg. and 6.0 rpg.).

Seward County has defeated Northeastern Colorado in their three previous meetings by an average of 18.7 points per game.
