The Seward County Community College volleyball team finished fifth-place at the Missouri State-West Plains Tournament in West Plains, Missouri, last weekend. The Lady Saints lost their first two matches against No. 3 Iowa Western and No. 4 Missouri State-West Plains, before defeating Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, State Fair Community College and Mineral Area College. Seward ran up against a national-powerhouse on Friday against No. 3 Iowa Western (46-2). Although the Lady Saints recorded eight blocks in game-one, Iowa Western was too much defeating SCCC 28-30 and 22-30. In game-two, Seward County dropped their match to No. 4 Missouri State (21-30, 17-30) on the Lady Grizzlies home court. The loss moved Seward County’s losing streak to eight matches, their longest of the regular season.

The Lady Saints put together three strong matches, starting with their final game on Friday night against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. SCCC won the match in three games, 30-13, 27-30 and 15-7. Sophomore, Juliana Nascimento, recorded 10 kills with a team-high .467 hitting percentage. Freshman, Jennifer Noel, collected nine kills, with six blocks and a .353 hitting percentage to lead the way for Seward County. Freshman setter, Alex Droogsma, totaled 33 assists.

Droogsma helped pace the Lady Saints in a four-game match victory against State Fair Community College on Saturday morning. Sophomore outside hitter, Janete Ferreira, led the team with 17 kills, while Noel (16 kills) and freshman, Jenny Schwier (11 kills) also totaled double figures in kills. Freshman libero, Katy Troutman, continued her strong defensive play with 19 digs to lead the team.

The Lady Saints travel to Pratt Community College on Monday, October 23, taking on the seventh-place Lady Beavers (11-18) in a 6:30 p.m. Jayhawk West Conference match at the Beaver Dome. Seward County will play their final home match of the regular-season on Wednesday, October 25, taking on Butler C.C. (20-16) for a 6:30 p.m. conference match. Sophomores, Dana McLaren, Juliana Nascimento and Janete Ferreira will be recognized on sophomore recognition night as they play their final home regular-season game at the Green House.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING:
Janete Ferreira is nine kills away from breaking the all-time single-season mark set by 2004 NJCAA First Team All-American, Luana Cavalcanti... Alex Droogsma moved past three former SCCC setters into fourth-place all-time in single-season assists. Droogsma, who currently has 1,481 assists this season in 140 games played (10.6 apg.) moved past Chelsie Cude (1,412), Kelli Kirkwood (1,448) and Emily Baker (1,465) after recording 125 assists last weekend. Next on the list for Droogsma to pass will be Joella Zubia (1,487) and Shelby Smith (1,545). With three regular season matches remaining on the Lady Saints schedule, look for Droogsma to move into second place all-time before the start of the Region VI Tournament. April Fries, owns the all-time record with 1,706 assists in 2000.
