Seward County Community College athletics have kicked off the 2006-2007 school year. All of the seven varsity athletic programs at Seward County have their student-athletes on campus and their coaches are now preparing their athletes for what it will take to compete in the Jayhawk West Conference and at the Region VI and National level. This year the Saints and Lady Saints athletic teams welcome back 39 sophomore athletes and welcome a total of 65 student-athletes to SCCC. There are 29 student-athletes from Kansas, 53 from out of the state of Kansas and 22 student-athletes who are from outside of the United State.

The Seward County volleyball team started their season hosting the SCCC Kick-Off Classic in the Green House. The Lady Saints started two sophomores and four freshmen while going 2-2 in the opening weekend classic. The Lady Saints defeated Cisco J.C. and Garden City C.C. while finishing in a three-way tie for second place. Sophomore right side hitter, Juliana Nascimento, led the Lady Saints by being named to the All-Tournament team.

Seward County began the final week of August with the news of a Pre-Season NJCAA No. 15 ranking. The Lady Saints received three rankings last year in the Top 20. This year marks the 12th consecutive season that the Lady Saints volleyball program has been ranked nationally.

Other Lady Saints news included returning All-Conference and All-Region VI outside hitter, Janete Ferreira, who was named a Pre-Season NJCAA Third Team All-American. Ferreira is coming off a freshman season where she led the team in kills (408) and kills per game (3.61). Ferreira and the Lady Saints open the month of September in the Hill College Labor Day Tournament in Hillsboro, Texas.

The Seward County menís and womenís basketball programs have announced their scrimmage schedules for the month of October. The Saints have scrimmage dates scheduled for Oct. 13-14 (Dallas, Texas), Oct. 21 (Hutchinson, KS) and Oct. 26 (Alva, Oklahoma). The SCCC Lady Saints will have pre-season scrimmage action on Oct. 7 (Warrensburg, Missouri), Oct. 14 (Great Bend, Kansas) and Oct. 21 (Denton, Texas). Both teams will showcase their 2006-2007 teams in the Saints Bookstore Basketball Benefit Night on Oct. 28, at the Green House.

Seward County baseball and softball have begun their fall seasons with practices in preparation of their fall schedules that begin in early September. The back-to-back Region VI Tournament softball champions have five home dates scheduled for this fall. The Saints will be in action at Brent Gould Field on the campus of SCCC five times this fall.

The Seward County menís and womenís tennis programs are both coming off National Tournament seasons where the menís team finished 9th in Nationals while the womenís team grabbed 10th place at the National Tournament.

Both squads will start their fall season on September 8-9, traveling to Wichita for the Wichita Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament.
