The Seward County Community College volleyball team completed the SCCC Kick-Off Classic on Saturday with a victory and a loss. Seward County dropped their match against Frank Phillips College 21-30, 26-30 and 25-30. Frank Phillips finished the classic with a perfect 4-0 record, winning the Kick-Off Classic championship. The Lady Saints won the final match of the day against conference foe Garden City Community College. SCCC needed four games to defeat the Lady Broncbusters 30-24, 30-27, 28-30 and 30-15. Seward County is now 2-2 overall this season.

Frank Phillips was unstoppable in this yearís classic, the Lady Plainsmen didnít drop a single game in the four matches they played (12-0 game record/4-0 match record). The Lady Saints growing pains proved to be too large of an obstacle in their three-game loss to Frank Phillips. SCCC recorded a meager .081 hitting percentage (23 kills-15 errors-99 attacks) and totaled 14 receiving errors and eight service errors.

Not all was disappointing for the Lady Saints as sophomore outside hitter Janete Ferreira, led the team with eight kills and 11 digs. Sophomore right side hitter, Juliana Nascimento posted a team-high four service aces and tied for the team lead with three blocks.

The Classic finale pitted two Jayhawk West Conference programs who last faced each other at the Green House last November in a Region VI Tournament Play-In-Match. Seward County defeated Garden City last year to advance and this season the outcome was no different. SCCC played with a high intensity style as they took a commanding lead winning the first two games 30-24 and 30-27.

The third game looked as though it could go to either team with the score tied 28-28, Garden City scored two straight points to win the game 30-28. Game four belonged to the Lady Saints from the start as they rallied and scored the games first eight points before the Lady Broncbusters could get a side-out. SCCC held on winning 30-15 to win the game and take the match from their conference opponents.

Seward County will travel on Wednesday, August 30 to Lamar Community College for a non-conference match that begins at 7:00 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time).
