The Seward County Community College volleyball season is underway and so is the 2006 SCCC Kick-Off Classic, which began on Friday and continues through Saturday at the Green House on the campus of SCCC. The Lady Saints came out victorious in their season debut against Cisco Junior College. SCCC defeated the Lady Wranglers 30-12, 30-16 and 30-21. In the final match on Friday, Seward County dropped their match against New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) 26-30, 30-19, 27-30 and 27-30. Seward County is now 1-1 overall this season with two matches scheduled for Saturday.

Seward County started four freshmen in their first match of the season against Cisco J.C. with returning All-Region VI players Janete Ferreira and Juliana Nascimento. The Lady Saint newcomers adjusted well in their first match of the season by dominating Cisco J.C. in three games.

Ferreira and Nascimento each collected 10 kills with Nascimento leading all SCCC players with a .444 hitting percentage (10 kills-3 errors-22 attacks). Seward County freshman, Alex Droogsma, (starting setter) had a strong debut performance tallying 32 assists in her first collegiate match. Nascimento completed a double/double with 10 digs.

In the 7 p.m. match, Seward County faced a completely opposite opponent as NMMI returned eight players from last seasonís roster. Seward County battled throughout the match with the Lady Broncos, but NMMI came back from an early deficit in game four to defeat the Lady Saints.

Freshman libero, Katy Troutman, looked sharp in her Lady Saints debut on Friday recording 23 digs against NMMI and 15 digs against Cisco J.C. Ferreira carried the offensive attack in game-two with 24 kills and Droogsma set the pace with 45 assists.

The Lady Saints will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against Frank Phillips College, and again at 7:00 p.m. against Garden City C.C. Frank Phillips completed the first day of competition at the Classic as the only unbeaten team, knocking off both Garden City (3-0) and Cisco J.C. (3-0). GCCC split their opening two matches winning their opening match 3-2 against NMMI, and then dropping the second match to Frank Phillips (0-3).
