The SCCC Kick-Off Classic volleyball tournament begins tomorrow, August 25 at the Green House, on the campus of Seward County Community College. The two-day classic will have matches starting at 11:00 a.m. continuing through 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Seward County Lady Saints will welcome Cisco (TX) Junior College, Frank Phillips (TX) College, Garden City Community College and New Mexico Military Institute to this year’s classic.

The Seward County Lady Saints open their season at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow against Cisco J.C. The Lady Saints will finish tomorrow playing New Mexico Military at 7:00 p.m. SCCC will once again play at 1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Admission to all matches are FREE.

Last season, Seward County won the classic with a perfect 4-0 record. Returning outside hitter Janete Ferreira, was named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, and SCCC setter Kelli Kirkwood, joined Ferreira on the All-Tournament team.

The Lady Saints first opponent in the classic will be Cisco J.C. who competes in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference. Last season Cisco J.C. finished with a 1-20 overall record including a 1-11 record against Region V competition. Head Coach Susan Moore has a roster that includes 10 freshman and five sophomores. The Lady Wranglers top returning player is Samantha Mendez, who ranked among league leaders last season in blocks per game.

New Mexico Military has consistently been among the field at the SCCC Kick-Off Classic. In 2005, NMMI finished second in the classic with a 3-1 record. First-year head coach, Shelby Smith, (a former Lady Saints All-Conference and All-Region VI setter-1999) will bring in an experienced team that returns eight sophomores from last year’s team that produced a school-record 23 victories (23-10 overall record). Players to watch for NMMI include 2005 First Team All-Conference selections Angela Varnum & Tijana Knezevic. Additionally, returning outside hitter Jovana Lubura (6’2”) was named to the 2005 SCCC Kick-Off Classic All-Tournament team and she earned First Team All-Conference and All-Region honors during her freshman season.

Another former Lady Saints alum, Charity Sevedra, joins her new team this year at Frank Phillips College. Sevedra, a 1996 graduate of SCCC was the head coach at New Mexico Military before accepting the head coaching position at FPC. Frank Phillips returns four sophomores from last season’s team that finished 25-10 overall. Frank Phillips has become a national contender placing 5th in the NJCAA National Tournament in 2003 and 6th place in 2004.

Jayhawk West Conference opponent Garden City Community College makes another appearance at the Kick-Off Classic, but this season will be guided by first-year head coach, Nikola Petrovic. Garden City returns two players off last seasons team that finished 17-19 overall, with a sixth place finish in the Jayhawk West Conference. GCCC returns All-Region VI and All-Jayhawk West performer, Keahilani Kaleo, who was one of the top passers in the conference in 2005.
