Over the past two weeks, the Seward County Lady Saints have picked the right time to play at the top of their game. While going just 2-7 in nonconference competition, the Lady Saints opened Jayhawk West play with a 3-0 sweep at defending conference champions Barton a week ago, and Wednesday night in front of an amped up Greenhouse crowd, took it to the 2011 league runners-up Colby by the same 3-0 count to move to 2-0 in Jayhawk West Conference action.

Seward couldn’t have scripted their start much better as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead thanks to a sloppy Colby attack and a pair of kills from Morgan Riley and Thayna Silva. The Lady Trojans cut it to a 7-3 game before Silva hammered down two more kills to put Seward on top 9-3 but Colby stormed back to score six of the next eight points to make it an 11-9 game midway through. Following a timeout from Head Coach Bert Luallen, the Lady Saints responded by scoring six straight points on a pair of blocks from Lakeria Eatmon and points from setter Alyssa Olson on a dump and an ace to make it 17-9. The Lady Saints went up by as many as 11 before Colby made a late run to cut the lead to 24-18, but Annelise Sanchez found the line with an attack to close it out and give Seward the 25-18 game one win. The Lady Saints got off to another good start in the second as they led 6-4 on a kill from Sanchez to start a 5-0 jaunt including a pair of aces from Bailey McFerren to take a 10-5 lead. They stretched their lead to 15-9 on an ace from Chloe Davis and a back to back kill and solo block from McFerren had Seward out in front 17-10. The Lady Saints block continued to frustrate the Colby offensive attack and with three more kills from Sanchez and another from Silva to finish it off, Seward was up 2-0 with a 25-16 victory. The Lady Trojans had their first lead of the match early in game three at 3-2 when Davis rolled off six straight points at the service line including three aces to give Seward the lead back 8-3. Colby regained their footing and tied the game back up at 10-10 before going on a 5-1 run to take a 15-11 lead. The Lady Trojans remained in front by three 18-15 when a kill from McFerren and an ace from Whitney Garinger made it a one point contest 18-17 in favor of Colby. Colby sided out to make it a 19-17 game but Seward roared back to score the next five points to take a 22-19 lead. The teams traded points to 23-20 when a pair of Seward County errors cut their lead to just one at 23-22. An errant Colby attack gave the Lady Saints match point at 24-22 and they finished things off on the next play with a kill from Riley to give them a 25-22 game three win and the sweep.
The Lady Saints were solid in almost every facet of the match on Wednesday, hitting .227 as a team while notching 10 aces and 7 blocks in the win. Silva led Seward with 9 kills in the victory while also tallying a team best 7 digs for the Lady Saints. Sanchez continued her recent hot streak with 8 kills for the Lady Saints while Davis finished with 4 aces and tied for the team lead with 7 digs from her libero position.
Seward improves to 4-7 overall on the season but more importantly to 2-0 in Jayhawk West Conference play. The Lady Saints will have their stiffest test of the early conference season on Saturday when they travel to the Sports Arena in Hutchinson to take on the only other remaining unbeaten in the conference, the Hutchinson Lady Blue Dragons at 2:00 in the Salt City.
