The Seward County Community College menís tennis team completed the 2006 NJCAA National Tennis Championship last week in Plano, Texas, with an overall finish of ninth place among 25 national tournament teams. Laredo (TX.) Community College won the national championship with 48 overall points with Tyler (TX.) Junior College finishing as runner-up (46), and Collin County (TX.) Community College finishing third (35). The Saints received 18.5 points finishing two points behind seventh-place Barton County Community College (20.5), and 1.5 points behind Johnson County Community College (20).

This year marks the first-time in SCCC history that the menís tennis team has qualified for the national tournament. NJCAA Division I menís tennis is made up of 64 collegeís, and for the eighth consecutive season the Saints have been ranked in the Top 25 of division I tennis.

The Saints placed four singles players in the Round of Eight (winnerís bracket), one player in the Round of 16 (winnerís bracket) and one player in the Round of 16 of the consultation bracket. All three Saints doubles teams finished in the Round of 16 (winnerís bracket competition).

Saints freshman No. 4 singles player, Rogerio Yamamota, was impressive during his first two singles matches defeating Sinclair Community College and University of Arkansas Fort-Smith singles players, 6-0, 6-1. Rogerio lost in the Round of Eight to the top-seed in No. 4 singles from Laredo C.C. 0-6, 1-6.

SCCC sophomore, Bruno Falcao, competed in No. 5 singles at the national tournament and advanced to the Round of Eight. Falcao defeated Meridian Community College (6-0, 6-1) and Moraine Valley C.C. (6-0, 6-0) before dropping his final match to the Abraham Baldwin singles player who was ranked second in No. 5 singles.

Another singles player who was noticed during the tournament was freshman, Adam Hambleton. Hambleton competed at No. 6 singles and entered his second round match after receiving a first round bye. Hambleton defeated Meridian C.C. 6-0 and 6-1 to advance to the Round of Eight. Hambleton battled the Collin County C.C. singles player in what many coaches considered the match of the tournament. Hambleton came up short losing 7-6, 4-6 and 4-6. Hambleton finished a fine freshman season with a Top 8 singles finish at the national tournament and also a runner-up finish at the regional tourney.

Seward County No. 1 doubles team, Ruben Mora/ Alejandro Martinez defeated Moraine Valley C.C. 6-2 and 6-5 before exiting the tourney against Johnson County C.C. 3-6, 6-2 and 6-7. Thiago Lins/Rogerio Yamamota competed in No. 2 doubles and also made it to the Round of 16 by defeating Scottsdale C.C. 6-2 and 6-5. The Brazilian duo lost their next match to Abraham Baldwin, 3-6 and 4-6 to the fourth ranked No. 2 doubles team in the tournament.
