The Seward County Lady Saints tennis team will be playing at the NJCAA National Tournament yet again this May after finishing in 3rd place at this weekend’s Region VI Tournament in Wichita. The Lady Saints finished with 15.5 points and got 2nd place finishes from Dariya Dashutina, Leticia Monteiro, and Kurstie Zepeda in singles and a 2nd place finish from Monteiro and Caitlin Workman in #3 doubles.

Every Lady Saints singles player finished in the top three in the region and each went 1-1 in the tournament. Dashutina won her first match against Johnson County in #1 play 6-1, 6-3 before falling in the finals 6-4, 6-2 to Cowley. In #2 action Sandri Munoz lost her first match 6-3, 6-1 against Johnson but bounced back with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Barton to finish 3rd. Katiuska Adarmes went the same route in #3 singles, losing to Cowley 6-1, 6-1 and beating Barton 6-2, 6-1 while Susan Nguyen did the same dropping her opener 6-2, 6-2 to Johnson and winning the 3rd place match 7-5, 7-5 in a good one over Hesston. Monteiro beat Barton 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the #5 draw but lost to Cowley in the finals to finish 2nd. Zepeda got a win against Johnson in the semis of the #6 draw 6-2, 6-1 before falling to the Champion Tigers to also finish 2nd.
Seward also got three top three finishes in doubles play at Dashutina/Adarmes and Zepeda/Nguyen both lost their opening round matches against Johnson County before coming back to beat Barton in the consolation match. In #3 doubles Monteiro and Workman teamed up to beat the Lady Cavs 6-2, 6-2 but fell in the title match to Cowley 6-1, 6-0 to finish as runners-up.
The Lady Saints finished 9-9 on the weekend and are now 39-52 overall on the season as they head to Tyler, Texas and the National Tournament from May 5-11.
