In their first showdown of the year, in front of a packed Greenhouse crowd, the #2 Hutchinson Lady Blue Dragons gave the #6 Seward County Lady Saints their worst defeat of the year. Saturday night in the Sports Arena in Hutchinson, the Lady Saints had revenge on their mind and what a better way to get it than against the 28-0 Lady Dragons on their home court where they havenít lost in nearly 60 games. A well-executed game plan had the Lady Saints on top by as many as 9 in the first half before ending the half on top by 5. Seward remained on top for the majority of the second half and were still on top by 4 with 6:38 remaining when Hutchinson turned the tables and finished strong to overpower the Lady Saints and go on to win 58-49.

Seward held the regionís top scoring team without a field goal for the first 4 minutes of the game, but couldnít get much going themselves and led just 2-0 before Hutch hit a shot to tie the game at 2. The Lady Saints scored the gameís next 6 points on a three from Mariah Lee and three Ashlynn Knoll free throws to go ahead 8-2 with 15:04 to go in the half. Seward looked in control throughout the first half and only once was Hutchinson within one possession when a Ricquia Jones three and a Mattie Yanke to Knoll connection gave them their largest lead of the half at 22-13 with 6:36 left in the half. The Lady Dragons whittled the Seward lead down to one with 2:42 remaining but the Lady Saints finished the half of a mini 4-0 run to take a 28-23 lead into the halftime break. Seward held Hutchinson to just 22% shooting in the first half and shot 41% themselves to put the Lady Dragons behind at the half for only the second time all season.
The high powered Lady Dragons wasted no time to erase the Seward lead as the second half began and just 1:22 in, the game was tied at 28. Four straight points from Knoll gave the Lady Saints the lead once again and the back and forth began. Hutch scored four straight of their own to tie the game for the third time before Seward stormed back with a pair of threes from Knoll and Yanke to go back on top themselves 39-35. The Lady Saints held the four point lead to 44-40 with 6:38 to go when a 4-0 Hutch run tied the game at 44 with 4:55 left. From there it was all Hutchinson. The Lady Dragons outscored Seward 14-5 down the stretch and Hutch went on to win 58-49.
Seward outshot the Lady Dragons 36% to 31% in the game but the Lady Saints were plagued by 23 turnovers while Hutch turned it over just 11 times. Knoll scored a game high 22 for Seward and also grabbed 9 rebounds in what was her best game in nearly a month while Lee was the only other Lady Saint in double figures as she finished with 11 points and 5 boards.
The Lady Saints finish the season 22-7 overall and 11-5 in Jayhawk West play where they tied for 2nd place but lost a tie-breaker to Garden City and a coinflip to Cloud County to get the #4 seed from the West for the Region VI Tournament. The Lady Saints will kick off tournament play Wednesday in the friendly confines of the Greenhouse where they will host Allen County at 6:00.
