It was a game to forget for the Seward County Lady Saints Saturday night in the Perryman Center in Garden City. After going down by seven before the half, Seward could not find an answer for the Lady Busters in the final 20 minutes as Garden City scored 56 second half points en route to a blowout 88-68 loss to push the Lady Saints out of the #2 spot in the Jayhawk West.

Early on it was anybody’s game. The Lady Saints and Lady Busters traded baskets back and forth and there were 10 lead changes in the first 12 minutes of the first half. The game was knotted at 18 with 8 minutes left in the half when Garden City hit a three pointer to take the lead and swing the tides. The Lady Busters slowly built on their lead as the first half came to a close and at the halftime break it was 32-25 in favor of Garden City. After a strong shooting performance in their last outing, the Lady Saints struggled against Garden in the first half of this one, shooting just 35% from the floor and was 2 for 12 from the three point line after canning 14 three’s in Wednesday’s win over Dodge City.
As the second half got underway, it was clear that the Lady Saints scuffling was not left in the locker room at the half. Garden City quickly extended their lead to double digits and held Seward at bay as they drained the clock and built on their lead. The Lady Saints found themselves within striking distance as they made it an 11 point game with 1:52 remaining, but couldn’t close the gap and Garden City was strong from the free throw line down the stretch to rub salt in the Lady Saints wounds as their lead swelled before finally coming to rest at 20 at the final horn 88-68.
The final stat sheet for the Lady Saints was an ugly one as Seward as Garden City dominated nearly every category in the game. Seward shot just 36% from the floor and 23% from three point land and was outrebounded by the Lady Busters 50 to 36 in the loss. Ashlynn Knoll and Kayla Thomas were the only two Seward players in double figures as both finished with 12.
The loss is a costly one for the Lady Saints as they fall to just 21-6 overall but to 10-4 in Jayhawk West Conference play. Now, Seward will need wins in their final two games of the season against Butler and #2 Hutchinson to have a chance at the 2nd seed out of the West while a loss would likely send them to the #4 seed. The Lady Saints will be back at it on Wednesday in their regular season home finale as they host the Butler Lady Grizzlies at 6:00 in the Greenhouse. It will be Sophomore Recognition night as the five Seward sophs will be honored between games after playing their final regular season game here in Liberal.
