Decked out in their finest pink gear for their annual “Think Pink” night, the Seward County Lady Saints connected on 14 three pointers Wednesday night in the Greenhouse to run away with an 84-35 win over Dodge City to clinch home court advantage in the first round of the Region VI Tournament. Seward closed the first half on a 21-2 run to take a 42-18 halftime lead and put up nearly the identical score in the second half to come away with the 49 point win.

Looking for their first win of the Jayhawk West season, Dodge City was pesky early on. After Seward took a 5-0 lead out of the gates, the Lady Conqs scored the next seven points to go ahead 7-5. Unfortunately for Dodge, that was their last lead of the game. The Lady Saints kicked it in gear and went on a 13-0 run thanks to steals and scores from Ricquia Jones and Charmaine Burns as well as a three pointer by Kelsey Blair and kept Dodge City scoreless for over 5 minutes to take an 18-7 lead with 11:14 to go in the half. The Lady Conqs came back and again made a game of things with the score just 21-16 with 8:15 to go in the period but a Mattie Yanke three sent the Lady Saints on a 21-2 run to close the half to take a big 42-18 lead into the break. Seward held Dodge City to just six first half field goals and none in the final 9:08 of the half. Offensively the Lady Saints were solid, hitting on 44% of their first half shot attempts and 8 of 19 from three point land, good for 42% in the period.
The three point train kept on chugging as the second half got underway and Ashlynn Knoll buried a triple from the top to get things going and put Seward up by 27. Later on it was Anete Kirsteine and Jones connecting on back to back long balls to put the Lady Saints up 57-21 and Seward extended their lead to 68-30 moments later as Kayla Thomas found Jones again for a three with 9:10 remaining. Seward took their first 40 point lead of the game with 4:45 left when Knoll connected with Payton Fleming for a three to put the Lady Saints on top 73-31. The Lady Saints scored 24 of the final 29 points in the game and cruised to an easy 84-35 win over the Lady Conqs at the final horn.
Six different Seward players connected from the outside in the win and their 14 three pointers as a team were the most makes in a game this season. In fact, the 14 trifecta’s are the most in a game for a Lady Saints team since the 2003-2004 season when Seward also connected on 14. Jones led the Lady Saints with 20 points and also had 6 steals while Blair led a strong Seward bench in the game with 13 points and 4 steals. Thomas hit on 6 of her 7 shots and finished with 12 points and a game high 5 assists while Knoll also reached double figures, scoring all 10 of her points in the second half. Kirsteine and Yanke both scored all of their points from behind the arc, combining for 6 three pointers and 18 points in the win.
The Lady Saints pick up their 21st win of the season compared to just 5 losses while their Jayhawk West Conference mark improves to 10-3 which is good enough to clinch a home date for them in the Region VI Tournament first round on March 7th. Next up for Seward is a key seeding matchup with Garden City on Saturday night in the Perryman Center which will tip off at 5:30.
