The Seward County Community College baseball team has advanced to the eight-team NJCAA Region VI Tournament in Wichita, after defeating Fort Scott Community College 11-7, in the third and final game of the best-of-three series in Fort Scott on Monday. The Saints and Greyhounds split the first two games on Sunday and then the Saints capitalized on three multi-run innings scoring five runs in the third, four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to win the First Round Playoff series, advancing them to Wichita for the third consecutive season. The Saints improve to 31-25 overall and Fort Scott finishes their 2006 season with a 34-23 overall record.

Seward County was led on Monday by their top four hitters in their batting line-up as they combined batted 9-for-16 with eight runs, seven RBI and four extra base hits. Sophomore shortstop, Jeff Brewer, led the team going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a two-run home run and four RBI. For the three-game series, Brewer went 6-for-13 with two home runs and seven RBI.

The Saints started sophomore right-handed pitcher, Matt Sopic, who lasted only two innings allowing four hits and three earned runs. SCCC answered with freshman right-handed pitcher, Zeb Birch, who has been typically a starter for the Saints during the regular season. Birch was effective for six innings earning the win out of the bullpen allowing five hits and three earned runs.

Other Saints in the top of their batting order who had offensive production were left fielder, Brian Majors (2-for-3, three runs scored), right fielder, Erik Hegstad (2-for-5, RBI) and third baseman, Toby Davis (2-for-4, two doubles).

The Region VI Tournament format changed in 2004, when Seward County won the eight-team tournament with a perfect 6-0 record, making their first-ever appearance at the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. Last season, the Saints finished fourth in the Region VI Tournament with a 4-2 record.

Seward County will play at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 6 at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita, the home of the Wichita Wranglers (Kansas City Royals) AA team. The Saints will play Hutchinson Community College (43-11) who defeated Labette Community College 1-0 and 12-2 in their First Round Playoff Series in Hutchinson. The Saints and Blue Dragons split four Jayhawk West Conference games this season. All tickets for the Region VI Tournament are $10 for those over age five (5). Those five and under will be admitted free.
