The Jayhawk West Conference leading and 8th ranked Seward County Lady Saints traveled to Dodge City Saturday night to take on the struggling Lady Conquistadors in the Dodge City Civic Center and had no problem dispatching of the home team as they took a 56-23 lead into the halftime break before putting things on cruise control and taking it home 89-44 to remain tied with Hutchinson for the top spot in the West.

The records followed suit early on between the Lady Saints and Lady Conqs as Seward bolted out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back. Dodge City, implying a defensive strategy that Seward had yet to see in 2011-2012, dared the Lady Saints to shoot the ball from the outside and Seward did, burying three after three to build a big lead right off the bat. Ricquia Jones connected on a pair of early long bombs as did Ashlynn Knoll and Kelsey Blair to put the Lady Saints comfortably ahead. As the half was about ready to come to a close, Seward had the ball with just 4 seconds left and instead of taking a 30 point lead to the break, the Lady Saints point guard Jones figured she would give it one last whirl and with a heave as the buzzer sounded, the freshman connected on a half-court shot to put Seward on top 56-23 as they went to the half. The Lady Saints had their radar locked in during the first 20 minutes, shooting 55% from the field and a blazing 47% from the three point line.
Seward backed off their pressure in the second half with the big lead but was still able to execute on both ends of the floor in the half court to extend upon their already sizeable advantage. Mariah Lee took over inside with a number of offensive rebounds and put backs while Knoll added to her point total with a pair of hoops and Blair again found the bottom of the net from three point land to put the Lady Saints up 76-35. A good sign for Seward fans came late in the half as Payton Fleming returned to action after missing three straight games and all the freshman did was score 7 points and grab 2 points in just 9 minutes of action. The Lady Saints pulled up on the reigns during the final minutes as they milked the clock dry to come away with an 89-44 win to remain perfect in conference play. Dodge City finished the second half shooting just 17% from the field, reminiscent of last year’s game in the Civic Center where the Lady Conqs connected on only 2 second half field goals.
Individually for the Lady Saints it was Lee leading the way for the second straight game as she finished with her 6th double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds to go along with 2 blocks and 2 steals. Knoll pitched in 16 points and 9 rebounds in 17 minutes of action and Blair knocked down 4 of 7 from deep to finish with 12 points. Jones scored all 9 of her points in the first half and Hanna Bognar added 8 points and 4 rebounds off the Lady Saints bench.
Seward wins their 9th straight game overall and keeps pace with Hutchinson atop the Jayhawk West standings at 5-0. The Lady Saints return home on Wednesday and take on upstart 4-2 Garden City who upset Cloud County Sunday.
