The freshly ranked #8 team in the country, the Seward County Lady Saints got off to a hot start Wednesday night on the road in their matchup with an upstart Pratt Lady Beavers team, leading 42-17 at the half. Good thing they did, as Pratt roared back in the second half to make a game of it before Seward finished strong and came out on top of a 66-48 decision.

It was certainly a tale of two halves for both the Lady Saints and Lady Beavers. Seward got off to a hot start, stifling Pratt with their full court press and having their way on the offensive end to build a big lead. The Lady Saints seemingly couldn’t miss while the Lady Beavs couldn’t buy a bucket and at the break it was all Seward County 42-17. Seward shot 52% from the field and was 6 of 12 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes while Pratt shot just 25% and hit only 2 of 7 from deep.
With a different game plan in the second half, the Lady Beavers were the aggressors. Seward struggled to take care of the ball while Pratt continuously pounded the ball inside to 6’2 Cari Guyton, who the Lady Saints couldn’t stop. The Lady Saints lead shrunk to 14 midway through the second half but Seward hung on after the blistering start to win 66-48. Seward shot just 33% in the second half and connected on only 1 of 7 from three point land but hit 9 of 10 from the free throw line compared to just 9 of 18 for the Lady Beavers.
Ricquia Jones led the Lady Saints with a career high 19 in the win. Ashlynn Knoll returned to the Seward lineup after missing two games and had a nice performance with 15 points and 11 rebounds in 30 minutes of work. Charmaine Burns had 9 for the gals in green and both Anete Kirsteine and Kelsey Blair had 6 for Seward.
The win vaults Seward to 14-2 overall on the season and to 3-0 in Jayhawk West action. The Lady Saints extend their two decade long win streak over Pratt to 42 games with the Lady Beavers last win in the series coming in 1991. Next up for Seward will undoubtedly be their toughest task thus far in the Jayhawk West schedule as they welcome defending Region VI Champions Cloud County to the Greenhouse on Saturday Night. The teams will tip at 6:00 with free tickets available thanks to our buyout sponsor McDonald’s at either of their Liberal locations.
