For the first time in six years the Seward County Community College baseball team is not finishing their regular season as Jayhawk West Champions. The Saints did however finish their regular season with a doubleheader sweep over conference opponent, Pratt Community College on the road. The Saints defeated the Beavers 12-2 (five innings) and 9-5 at Stanion Field on Sunday afternoon. The Saints finish the regular season 29-24 overall and in fifth place with a 17-15 Jayhawk West Conference record.

Seward County tied the regular season with Colby for fifth place in the conference. In head-to-head competition this year the Saints and Trojans split their four games played. The next tie-breaker in deciding who would own the fifth seed and sixth seed for the Region VI Tournament came down to head-to-head record against the No. 1 seed in the Jayhawk West, Hutchinson. The Saints came out on top defeating the conference champs twice, while Colby’s only win over the Blue Dragons came in their season finale today.

The Region VI Tournament bracket is set as (No. 5) Seward County will travel to (No. 4) Fort Scott Community College for a best two-of-three series next Saturday, April 29, running through Sunday, April 30, with the “if necessary game”. Game time has not yet been set for Saturday.

Seward played well in their final regular season doubleheader as freshman, Zeb Birch and sophomore, Matt Sopic, each gave the Saints quality outings on the mound. Birch threw a complete-game five hitter against Pratt while striking out two batters. Sopic pitched effective through six innings scattering six hits and two runs.

SCCC sophomore left fielder, Brian Majors, was the story for the Saints as he has been for most of the season. The lead-off left-handed hitter went 6-for-9 with two runs scored, four RBI and a double and triple in the doubleheader.

The Saints hit .424 (25-for-59) in the twin bill while holding Pratt to a .292 (14-for-48) average at the plate.
