Behind a strong nucleus of returners and an exciting bunch of newcomers, the Seward County Lady Saints kicked off the 2011-2012 basketball season Tuesday in Shawnee, Oklahoma with a 106-48 win over Oklahoma Baptist JV.

The Lady Saints bolted out of the games to grab a 9-1 lead just 3:21 into the contest and didn’t allow the Bison to get their first field goal until the 15:00 mark of the game when they led 13-3. Seward continued to put the pressure on Oklahoma Baptist, causing turnover after turnover that led to numerous fast break points and the Lady Saints went ahead 27-9 with 7:19 to go in the half. They finished the first period just as they started it, scoring 19 points in the final seven minutes to take a comfortable 48-21 lead into the break. Seward connected on 42% of their first half shots including 5 of 16 from the three point line while Oklahoma Baptist was only able to get 20 shots off because of turnover problems and made just 7 of those to finish the half at 35%.
It was the Seward defense that ramped it up a notch as the second half began, as the Lady Saints allowed just 6 Bison points in the first 7:10 of the half while scoring 17 of their own to go up 65-27. Four minutes later and just 4 Oklahoma Baptist points later Seward gained their first 50 point advantage of the evening as the scoreboard had them on top 82-31 with 8:27 to go in the game. Seward did not let up and finished the contest as strong equally as impressive, topping the 100 point mark with 3:00 remaining and finishing off the Bison 106-48 to earn their first win of the 2011-2012 campaign.
Seward finished the game shooting 50% as a team, hitting on 45 of 91 field goal attempts including 57% shooting in their 58 point second half.
