The road to success has traveled through many top volleyball programs lately for the Seward County Community College volleyball team, and Saturday was no exception. The Lady Saints battled against two nationally ranked opponents on Saturday as they lost hard-fought matches against No. 7 University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (25-4) and (previously ranked No. 18) Midland College (25-12) on Saturday afternoon at the Green House in Liberal. The Lady Saints hosted the two-day SCCC Invitational, where three current NJCAA Top 20 teams participated. Last season all of the programs received Top 20 national rankings with four of them reaching the NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament in West Plains, Missouri.

The Lady Saints took on No. 7 Arkansas-Fort Smith in their early match on Saturday. The Lady Saints gave UA-Fort Smith a fight, dropping the first two games, 30-24 and 30-25, before defeating the Lady Lions, 30-24, in game-three. Arkansas-Fort Smith was guided by NJCAA Pre-Season First Team All-America, Camilla Pagnan, as they defeated SCCC in game-four 30-21. Seward County received strong performances from freshman, Jennifer Noel, sophomore, Juliana Nascimento and freshman libero, Katy Troutman.

In the Lady Saints second match on Saturday, they concluded the SCCC Invitational with a heart-breaking five-game loss to Midland College. The Lady Chaparrals defeated Seward County 24-30, 31-29, 30-14, 24-30 and 15-10, in their only win of the Invitational.

The Lady Saints put Midland away in game-one, with a dominating 30-24 outing. Midland squeezed past SCCC in game-two, 31-29, and crushed Seward County 30-14 in game-three. The Lady Saints didnít back down after a tough game-three, defeating Midland 30-24, to take the match to a fifth and final game.

With the pivotal game-five knotted up at 8-8, the Lady Chaparrals went on a 7-2 run to complete the match with a 15-10 victory.

Seward County drops to 15-20 overall this season and remain 2-2 in the Jayhawk West Conference and 1-1 in NJCAA D-I District competition.

The Lady Saints grueling schedule continues next Wednesday, October 18, taking on defending back-to-back NJCAA Region VI Tournament and Jayhawk West Conference champions, No. 9 Hutchinson Community College (15-10), at the Hutchinson Sports Arena at 6:30 p.m.
