MARCH 1 Ė MARCH 31, 2006

During the month of March, two Seward County Community College sports finished while four others have began Conference competition. SCCC menís and womenís basketball season have finished with post season awards being handed out to several Seward County athletes.

The menís basketball team finished their season 21-10 overall and 7-9 in the Jayhawk West Conference, tying them for fifth place in the West. The Saints received the seventh seed in the Western Division and traveled to Independence Community College for a Region VI First Round Playoff game. The Saints were defeated 75-58, by Independence, who finished their season as Region VI Tournament runner-up.

Saints sophomore center, Adam Tanner was named All-Region VI Honorable Mention and Jayhawk West First Team All-Conference.

The Seward County Lady Saints basketball team advanced to the Region VI Tournament in Wichita, before dropping their quarterfinal game to Labette Community College, 62-60. First year Head Coach, Toby Wynn, guided the Lady Saints to a successful 25-7 overall record and a 10-6 finish in the Jayhawk West Conference (fourth place). The Lady Saints basketball program has now won at least 25 games in 13 consecutive seasons.

Seward County had the most players represented in the womenís basketball All-Conference selections as four Lady Saints received All-Jayhawk West honors. Sophomore, Brio Rode was named All-Region VI (First Team) and All-Conference (Second Team), sophomore, Amanda McCue earned All-Region VI (Honorable Mention) and All-Conference (Honorable Mention), freshman, Ilda Chambe was tabbed Second Team All-Conference and sophomore, Sierra Radke was named Honorable Mention All-Conference.

The Seward County baseball team is currently 21-16 overall and 9-7 in the Jayhawk West Conference. The Saints traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, for their annual spring break trip where they went 3-4 against non-conference opponents. SCCC has 16 regular season conference games remaining before the Region VI First Round Playoff begins on April 29-30 at the home of the higher seeded team.

The Saints are led offensively by Kai Kirby (.453 batting average) and Brian Majors (.390). SCCCís leading pitcher is Michael Jarman (4-2, 2.42 ERA, 48 Kís).

The Lady Saints softball team is currently 22-16 overall, 6-0 in the Jayhawk West and 0-2 in District play. SCCC also traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, for spring break playing six games against Arizona junior colleges. The Lady Saints have 16 remaining games which will determine Jayhawk West Conference standings and Division I Region VI Tournament seedings for the post-season.

The leading hitters for the Lady Saints are Kelsey Trout (.379) and Sarah Venegas (.375). Lady Saints sophomore, Sarah Wittwer is 11-5 with a 2.98 ERA to lead the SCCC pitching staff.

The Seward County tennis teams have both started their seasons strong with the menís record 2-3 in match play and the SCCC women with a 4-1 record in match play on the season.
