The Seward County Lady Saints will go into this weekendís Region VI Tournament as the #2 seed after sweeping the Colby Lady Trojans 6-0 and 12-3 Friday afternoon in Colby to wrap up the 2011 regular season.

Seward took the opener 6-0 behind a 14 strikeout performance from Sydney Cicchetti and home runs from Leah Sitter and Lynda Musick while they would make the early going of game two a little more interesting as they failed to score through three innings before scoring a dozen runs in the final four to come away with a 12-3 victory.
With the chance for a conference title in the distant past and the Lady Saints first round opponent already set, Seward took the field Friday with pride on their mind. They looked pretty prideful early on against the Lady Trojans as they struck for three 1st inning runs on an RBI double from Michelle Duford and a 2 RBI single from Taylor McDougall to take the 3-0 lead before Colby came to bat. That is where the score would remain after 3 innings of play thanks to stellar as usual pitching from Cicchetti who through those first three innings had racked up 8 strikeouts in her first 9 outs to keep the Lady Trojans off the board. In the top of the 4th Seward struck again as Breanna Diaz led off the inning with a single and was able to trot home when Sitter hit an 0-2 pitch over the center field wall for a two run home run to make it 5-0 in favor of Seward. Cicchetti continued to cruise in the 4th and 5th to keep it a 5-0 game and the Lady Saints got a single run in the top of the 6th as Musick cracked her first career home run out of the park to lead off the inning and put Seward on top 6-0. That was more than enough for the conferenceís top pitcher as Cicchetti picked up 4 more strikeouts in the final two innings to finish with a career high tying 14 in the 6-0 win for the Lady Saints. Cicchetti earned her 42nd career victory and 23rd of the 2011 regular season as she went the distance in the win while allowing just the 2 first inning hits and 1 walk in the complete game shutout. Seward outhit Colby 12 to 2 in the game, getting 2 hit games from Musick, Sitter, Jill Rodgers, and Bianca Adame while Sitter and McDougall both drove in a pair for the Lady Saints.
The back end of the double header was a little bit more tense for the two teams as the Lady Saints went down in order in each of the first 3 innings while Seward starter Blaire Taylor returned the favor, setting the Lady Trojans down 1-2-3 in each of their first three at bats. Seward got the scoring going in the top of the 4th as Sitter, McDougall, and Duford all singled with no outs to load the bases for Rodgers. Rodgers lifted a fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly to score Sitter to make it 1-0 and later on in the inning Adame ripped a single through the hole on the right side to score two more and make it a 3-0 game. Colby wasted no time in getting their first runs of the game in the bottom half of the inning as a leadoff single followed by a home run made it 2-0 and a bean ball and an RBI groundout later in the inning would knot the game up at 3. The Lady Saints then returned the favor, jumping back on top 5-3 after RBI hits in the top of the 5th from McDougall and Kelsea Blackstock to retake the lead. After Taylor mowed through the bottom of the Colby order in the 5th, Seward added to their lead in the top of the 6th inning. McDougall got her third hit in as many innings to drive home one run and Duford legged out an infield single to bring home another Seward run before a two out error scored the Lady Saints 8th run of the game to put them ahead by five. A line drive double play ruined any hope of Colby runs in the bottom of the 6th and Seward put the game out of reach in the top of the 7th as Duford, Rodgers, and Blackstock strung together three straight RBI knocks to give the gals in green a 12-3 lead. That is where the game would finish as Taylor retired the side in order for the third consecutive inning in the 7th to wrap up the win and secure the Lady Saints of a 2nd place finish in the final Jayhawk West Conference standings. Taylor was solid to close the game, retiring the final 11 Lady Trojan hitters she faced while finishing the game giving up just 3 hits while striking out 5 and earning the win. The Lady Saints pounded out 18 hits in the victory including multi-hit games from six different players in the lineup. Rodgers led the bunch with a perfect 4 for 4 game while driving in 3 runs and was sandwiched between McDougall, Duford, and Blackstock who each went 3 for 5 with 2 RBIís in the win. Sitter finished 2 for 5 with 3 runs scored and her 33rd stolen base of the season while Diaz was 2 for 4 with a run scored.
The Lady Saints finish the regular season 37-11 and Jayhawk West Conference action 11-5. They will now have another week off before lacing up the cleats again, this time for keeps, in the Region VI Tournament against Garden City on Saturday at 12:00 in Wichita. Seward will look to win the tournament for the third straight year which would again qualify them for the NJCAA National Tournament later this month.
