After losing all five matchups with Clarendon last season, the Seward County Saints just about got even with the Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon in the Lone Star State as they won this year’s season series against them with a 5-3 win to wrap up the 2011 regular season. Seward’s Tyler Hill did it all for the Saints in the win, picking up 2 hits, 2 stolen bases, an RBI, and a save on the mound to close out the two run victory.

The Saints took an early lead on the Bulldogs in the 1st inning as a two out error allowed Jon Mestas to come to the plate with a pair of runners on and he took advantage with a single up the middle to score two and make it 2-0 Seward before Clarendon came to bat. In the 2nd the Saints manufactured a run as Ben Wainwright doubled to start the inning and was sacrificed over to third on a bunt from Brittain Ibbotson. Following a groundout that couldn’t get Wainwright home, Steven Polito slapped a single back through the box to score Wainwright and make it a 3-0 game. Clarendon scored their only run of the day off of Saints starter Gavin Glanz in the 3rd inning when Danny Loya singled to lead off the inning and quickly came around to score on a triple from left fielder Ryan Stajduhar to cut the Saints lead to 3-1. The Bulldogs evened things up in the bottom half of the 5th inning when a leadoff walk, double, and a sacrifice fly plated a pair of runs but Seward bounced back with two runs of their own in the top of the 6th as two Clarendon errors and a two out single to right from Hill saw the Saints back ahead 5-3. Austin Beisel picked up his defense with a double play ball after a leadoff error on the infield in the bottom of the 6th for Seward and Keegan Hucul and Paul Pulley each recorded a shutout inning for the Saints before handing the ball over to Hill in the 9th who got a pair of pop outs and a groundout to short to wrap things up and give Seward the 5-3 victory. Mestas finished the game 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s for the Saints while Polito and Hill each had 2 hits, an RBI, and a run scored in the victory. Willy Gustin had himself a 2 for 5 game at the top of the lineup and Kyle Henke was 2 for 2 off of the Saints bench. Jose Gonzalez was given the win on the hill for Seward while Hill picked up his second save of the year with the scoreless 9th.
Seward ends the regular season with a 38-18 mark which is their most regular season wins since the 2008 season. The Saints will now sit for 9 days before taking the field in live game action again which will be in the Region VI Tournament next Saturday when they will take on the #8 seed in the Jayhawk East in the Liberal Super Regional at Brent Gould Field.
