The Seward County Community College softball team went back to familiar territory yesterday traveling to Otero Junior College. Last season, Otero hosted SCCC for the District C Playoff when Otero defeated Seward advancing them into the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series. Yesterday afternoon, Otero J.C. swept the Lady Saints in LaJunta, 11-4 and 7-5 in a non-conference doubleheader. Lady Saints sophomore second baseman, Stephanie Jaime, lead the Lady Saints hitting two home runs in the doubleheader. SCCC falls to 22-16 overall and remains 6-0 in the Jayhawk West and 0-2 in District competition.

Seven SCCC returning sophomores were in the line-up in either game-one or game-two on Wednesday afternoon in the rematch from last year.

The Lady Saints made the most of their opportunities in game-one scoring four runs on four hits, including a solo home run by Jaime to lead-off the game and a two-run shot by Joanna Palacios in the second inning.

Game-one remained tied at 2-2, until the fifth inning when Otero scored five runs and added two runs in the sixth frame to put the game out of reach. Every starting Lady Rattler recorded a base hit as they collected 12 hits as a team.

In game-two, Seward County freshman, Meshia Patterson led off the sixth inning with a single to the left side of the infield. Designated player, Sarah Venegas, drove in Patterson with an RBI single to center field, tying the score 5-5.

Lady Saints starting pitcher, Sarah Wittwer, threw just four pitches in the bottom of the sixth inning recording a three up-three down inning. In the seventh inning, SCCC was unable to score, and Otero used a lead-off single by Nicole Zuniga and a two-run home run from Ashley Johnson to end the game with the Lady Rattlers defeating the Lady Saints 7-5.

Otero improves to 30-5 overall and remains in first place in the Region IX with an 11-1 conference mark.

Leading hitters for Seward County in game-two were Jaime (1-for-4, home run), Patterson (2-for-3), Palacios (2-for-3, RBI) and Venegas (2-for-3, two RBI).

SCCC pitchers, Becky Holland and Sarah Wittwer were the losing pitchers in game-one and game-two respectively. Holland is now 9-8 on the mound with Wittwerís record falling to 11-5 this season.

Seward Countyís remaining schedule will feature all Jayhawk West Conference and District games. The Lady Saints will travel to Garden City Community College on Wednesday, April 5, for a 2:00 p.m. Jayhawk West Conference and District doubleheader against the Lady Broncbusters. Last season, the Lady Saints played well against Garden City with a 6-1 overall record, including a 3-1 victory in the Division I Region VI Tournament championship game.
