In a battle between the top team in the Jayhawk West Conference, the Seward County Saints, and the top team in the WJCAC, the Clarendon Bulldogs, it would be the home team that would come out on top Wednesday afternoon at Brent Gould Field as Seward broke Clarendon’s 12 game win streak with a 7-1 victory to improve to 29-17 overall on the season.

Clarendon would get their only run of the game in the 3rd inning while the Saints used a 2 run 4th and a 3 run 6th to come away with the six run win.
The game kicked off right on time under sunny skies at Brent Gould Field. Both teams would miss scoring chances in the 1st inning and Saints starter Jace Moore kept the high powered Bulldogs off the board in the 2nd inning on just four pitches to give his team a chance to take the games first lead in the bottom of the 2nd. The Saints would do just that as they capitalized on an error to start the inning and would get an RBI single from Tyler Hill later on to go ahead 1-0. A Seward error would give the Bulldogs the run back in the top of the 3rd but Seward would answer in the bottom half of the frame as Jordan Dallalio doubled and JT Bean singled in front of an RBI groundout from Jake Barrios to put the Saints back on top 2-1. Seward would build on their lead in the 4th as Eddie Williams drove a sacrifice fly to center field to score Hill who doubled to lead off the inning and Tanner Rainey would rope his second double of the game to score another Saints run and put them ahead 4-1. Using their 4th and 5th pitchers of the day the Saints would get through the 5th and 6th innings unharmed to keep it a 4-1 game. The first four Seward hitters of the 6th inning would reach base with Ben Wainwright smacking an RBI double and Willy Gustin ripping an RBI single down the line to make it a 6-1 game. Later on in the frame the Saints would get another run when Carlos Dorado singled through the left side to score Wainwright to put Seward in command, up 7-1 going to the 7th inning. The Bulldogs would threaten to get back into the game in the top of the 7th as they loaded the bases with just one hit but Austin Beisel would get a big strikeout to end the inning and the threat to keep the Saints on top by six at stretch time. Clarendon would again get something going in the 8th inning but Gustin would gun down a runner trying to score from second base on a single with two outs to end the inning and keep Seward ahead 7-1. The Saints would not score in the 8th but they wouldn’t need to as Gustin then came in to finish things up on the mound, getting three straight pop ups to end the game and give Seward a 7-1 win. Hill would lead the Saints on offense in the game, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored in the contest while Gustin came off the Seward bench to finish 2 for 2 with an RBI while also recording an outfield assist and recording a scoreless inning on the mound in the game. Rainey would finish 2 for 5 with a pair of doubles and an RBI and Dorado and Wainwright would each have a hit and an RBI in their only trips to the plate in the game. Logan Hall earned the win for the Saints pitching staff who used eight different pitchers without allowing an earned run against a Clarendon team that averaged nearly 10 runs per game coming into Wednesday.
The Saints improve their overall record on the season to 29-17 and now focus their attention to a big Jayhawk West Conference series against Hutchinson this weekend at Brent Gould Field. With a series win against the Dragons, the Saints would all but assure themselves of hosting a Region VI Sub-Regional Tournament as one of the top two teams in the Western Division. The Saints and Dragons will start the series on Saturday with a double header starting at 1:00 while they will wrap up the four game set on Sunday with another pair of games beginning at 1:00 pm.
