With a one out single in her first at bat and a steal of second base on the next pitch, Seward County Lady Saints center fielder Leah Sitter has become the schoolís all-time stolen base queen with 45 career thefts. Sitter and her Lady Saints had a big day at the plate Wednesday afternoon in Liberal as they swept a Jayhawk West Conference double header 8-0 and 18-4 over the visiting Colby Lady Trojans to set up a pair of marquee matchups next week against Garden City and Butler.

Sitter would get the record breaker right away for Seward as she stole second base and then later on home on a double steal to give the Lady Saints an early 1-0 lead. After Sydney Cicchetti struck out three straight batters in the top of the 2nd the Lady Saints would take a 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning after Ashley Sullivan and Monique Lopez got on in front of Sitter with two outs and the Seward center fielder would line a single back through the box to score both and give the Lady Saints the three run lead after 2. Seward would be right back at it in the 3rd inning as reigning NJCAA Player of the Week Jill Rodgers singled on a line drive to left to start the inning and would later score along with Breanna Diaz on a single from Sullivan to make it 5-0 Lady Saints. Cicchetti would get two more strikeouts in a scoreless 4th inning and for the third straight frame the Lady Saints would score two in their half. This time it would be Rodgers and Taylor McDougall picking up the RBI singles with one out to put Seward ahead by a touchdown 7-0. Colby would get a leadoff single from Kaitlin Wright in their half of the 5th and Wright would steal second base to put herself in scoring position with nobody out but three straight Cicchetti strikeouts would quiet the Lady Trojans and keep it a 7-0 game. Seward would go down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 5th while another leadoff single by Colby would go by the wayside after three more Cicchetti strikeouts in the top of the 6th. Michelle Duford would step to the plate to lead off the Seward 6th and would waste no time in launching the first pitch she would see screaming over the left field wall for a home run to give the Lady Saints a modified 8-0 walk off win as the run rule was enforced. The Lady Saints would outhit Colby 12-3 in the game with five different Seward hitters picking up 2 hits in the game. Sitter would finish 2 for 4 with 2 RBIís and a pair of stolen bases, Duford would go 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, Rodgers finished 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored, Sullivan went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIís, and Lopez finished 2 for 2 with a run scored. Cicchetti would net the win after an electric performance in the circle that saw her throw a 3 hit shutout while striking out 13 without walking a batter.
The Lady Saints would again jump on top right away in game two as the first four batters of the game for Seward would find the sweet spot of the bat with Diaz and Sitter singling and Duford and Rodgers doubling to score three runs and put the Lady Saints on top 3-0. Seward then exploded for six runs in the 2nd inning as they sent 11 batters to the plate, taking advantage of a pair of Colby errors as well as picking up four singles to go ahead 9-0. Seward would score their runs in the inning on RBI singles from Sitter, Duford, and McDougall as well as the two others on Lady Trojan miscues to go up nine. Blaire Taylor would record her second straight 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 3rd and the Lady Saints would blow the game wide open in the bottom half of the inning. Seward would bat through their order with just one out in the 3rd, scoring eight runs with the big blows coming off the bats of Rodgers, Bianca Adame, and Dyonne Sedillos to make it a 17-0 game after 3. Colby would score their only runs of the day in the top of the 4th inning as they strung together a pair of hits after a Seward error and ended up with four tallyís in the inning but McDougall would golf her third home run of the season out in the bottom of the inning and Taylor would get a zero in the top of the 5th to seal the 18-4 run rule win for the Lady Saints. The middle of the Seward order was deadly in the win as Sitter, Duford, Rodgers, and McDougall combined for 9 hits, 10 RBIís, and 11 runs scored. Sitter finished 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIís, Duford was 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIís, Rodgers was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBIís, and McDougall was 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBIís. Adame and Sedllios also did some work at the bottom of the order as Adame was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI to go along with her 20th steal of the season while Sedillos scored 2 runs and drove in a pair in the game. Taylor picked up the win for Seward going all 5 innings while fanning 3 and walking just 1.
Seward improves their overall mark to 27-7 on the season and picks up their third and fourth straight Jayhawk West Conference wins to move to 4-2 on the year. They will continue their 14 game home stand next week as they host Garden City on Monday at Lady Saints Field, followed by #9 Butler on Wednesday here in Liberal.
