In a miserable weather day at Lady Saints Field Tuesday afternoon with winds gusting up to 56 miles per hour and some of the infield dirt ending up in Stevens County by dayís end, the Seward County Lady Saints did a good job of brushing off, literally and figuratively, the elements to come away with a pair of run rule wins against the Barton Cougars to move back even to 2-2 in Jayhawk West Conference play.

Seward would use an 8 run 1st inning to win game one 15-0 while game two would be more of the same as they scored 7 in the 1st and 8 in the 4th to win 16-1.
Seward would get things going right off the bat in game one as they would run through their lineup in their first at bats with just one out while scoring 8 runs. Jill Rodgers and Taylor McDougall would get the scoring going as both ripped RBI singles to put Seward up 2-0. A bases loaded walk and an error behind it would make it 4-0 Lady Saints and the big blow of the inning would come off the bat of Kelsea Blackstock who sent a 1-1 pitch towering over the left field wall for a grand slam to make it 8-0 Seward after 1. Barton would go down in order in both the 2nd and 3rd innings behind dazzling pitching from Sydney Cicchetti who recorded 5 strikeouts during the span. Seward would be back to their scoring ways in the bottom of the 3rd inning as Michelle Duford would rip a single up the middle with the bases loaded to score two and Rodgers would follow behind her with a double to clean up the other two runners to put the Lady Saints up 12-0. Seward wasnít done, Taylor McDougall would single to left to score Rodgers and after just 3 innings of play it was 13-0 Seward. Cicchetti would carry a perfect game into the 4th and would get two quick groundouts to put two outs on the scoreboard with the perfecto still intact. With two outs however, a soft single to center would break it up but the Seward sophomore would regroup and get a strikeout to end the inning and keep her shutout together. In the Seward 4th, the Lady Saints would get two more insurance runs on RBI singles from Leah Sitter and Duford and after shutting down the Cougars in order on three straight strikeouts in the 5th, the Lady Saints would go on to win 15-0. Cicchetti would earn her 13th win of the season by allowing just 2 hits in her second shutout of the 2011 campaign while striking out 11 without walking a batter. Rodgers would finish the game 3 for 4 with 3 RBIís while Duford would go 2 for 3 with 3 driven in. Blackstock would finish with the 4 RBIís on the 1st inning grand slam and the top two in the Lady Saints order, Breanna Diaz and Sitter, would each go 1 for 3 but would score 3 runs each in the win.
Game two would be much of the same for the two teams. Seward would send 12 to the plate in the 1st inning this time, scoring 7 runs on 7 hits behind RBI singles from five different players to take a 7-0 lead. Sitter would finish the inning 2 for 2 with 2 RBIís and a run scored. A Seward error would allow the Cougars to get on the board for the first time on the day as they would cut the Lady Saints lead to 7-1 but the gals in green would answer in the bottom half, getting a run on a groundout from Bianca Adame to make it an 8-1 game. Three straight Barton ground balls would quickly put the Lady Saints back up to the plate and they would get two more runs on a bullet to left from Rodgers to make it 10-1 after 3. Barton would go scoreless again in the 4th and Sewardís quick strike offense would be on display in the bottom of the inning. The first six Lady Saints batting in the bottom of the 4th would get hits including RBI singles from Diaz, Sitter, and Duford and then a three run home run that clipped the top of the fence off the bat of Rodgers to make it 16-1 Seward. They werenít done with the longball yet as Adame would single with one out and after a fly out on the infield, Blackstock would get into her second ball of the day, sending it screaming into the SCCC ropes course for a two run shot to make it 18-1. Seward pitcher Blaire Taylor would pitch around a pair of Seward errors in the top of the 5th , getting a strikeout and a pop out to end the game to bring in the run rule and give the Lady Saints the 18-1 win. Seward would smash out 21 hits in the victory as all 9 starters had hits in the game and 7 of the 9 had 2 or more. Sitter and Blackstock would each go 4 for 4 in the game with 3 RBIís and Rodgers would finish a perfect 3 for 3 with 6 RBIís and 2 runs scored. Ashley Sullivan and Monique Lopez would each go 2 for 4 with a run scored and Diaz would finish 2 for 5 with 3 runs scored for the second straight game. Taylor would toss a complete game on just 77 pitches while allowing just 2 hits and 1 unearned runs while fanning a pair and allowing no free passes.
After outscoring the Cougars 33-1 on the day, the Lady Saints move to 21-6 overall while evening up their Jayhawk West Conference record at 2-2. The games with Barton kicked off a 10 game homestand for Seward which will see them hit the field again this afternoon as they welcome the Otero Lady Ratters to Lady Saints Field at 1:00.
