After losing a close decision to them in the fall, the Seward County Lady Saints got their 2011 started off the right way with a 5-4 victory over Newman University Thursday in Wichita. Seward would win only 1 of 3 doubles matches but would bounce back to take 4 of 6 in doubles play to come away with the 5-4 win, the same count that the Jets had knocked them off by this fall in the two teams meeting.

Fanny Benincasa and Dariya Dahutina would highlight the day for Seward with a win over the #8 doubles team in NCAA Division II, Laryssa Ferreira and Hillary Hicks in the #1 doubles slot as the Lady Saints combo picked up a 9-7 win to get their season started on the right foot. Seward would lose 8-3 and 8-6 in #2 and #3 doubles and would fall behind 3-1 as Ferreira got back at Dashutina with a 6-2, 6-2 win in #1 singles play. Thatís when the Lady Saints got hot. Benincasa would take out Hicks 6-0, 6-4 in #2 doubles action and would set off a string of 4 straight wins for Seward. Kauana Goncalves would bounce back from a 6-1 defeat in the first set to win her match with a 6-1 second set and an 11-9 win in the decider to come away with the three set win in #3 singles. Salitza Abrantes would take care of Ashley Dunnam in #4 singles 7-5, 6-4 and Marcela Abrantes would win 4-6, 6-4, 17-15 in the match of the day in #5 singles. Newman would win in #6 singles 6-1, 6-4 but the Lady Saints would come out on top 5-4 at the end of the day to move to 1-0 on the season.
